After the western alliance previously swore that NATO would not put any member NATO state on the doorstep of Russia, a promise that was weak and viewed by many as false – ultimately influencing the decision by Russia, NATO General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg said today that Ukraine will be joining NATO as soon as the conflict is concluded.
Now, given that statement, why would Russia even fathom entering any type of peaceful resolution to the conflict. In essence, Stoltenberg has just turned the conflict in Ukraine into a zero-sum issue for Russia. The only way Russia can keep NATO away from its border is to win violently against Ukraine.

Don't lump me in with your warpig kind, boy.
My grandkids will NEVER go to fight your wars.
rubble <-> city liberated by Russia==
We will rebuild our cities and ukie POWs like germans before them will be the working hands on it.
If you love Russia so much, why don’t you move there (assuming you are not typing these lines from Russia)?
“Sanctions can at most have “very little” effect on most Russians.”
Not on Russian oligarchs who rule in that country.
If Putin did not anticipate the Finns’ reaction, he’s denser than a depleted uranium slug.
I don’t think he’s that dense.
But that blows up the whole “fear of NATO” bit. Which is nonsense anyway, because NATO is simply not configured as an offensive force. A weak Ukraine would almost be more a liability to NATO than an asset.
Finland OTOH is a huge asset.
Well, since Ukraine won’t have much of a GDP for a while, that’s a minimal concern. (NATO guidelines say 2% of GDP to be spent on defense. The amount actually paid to “NATO” as a financial entity is much smaller.)
Troops rotated in for training and exercises should be more than enough of a tripwire. Some portion of reparations from Russia can be in the form of weapons, munitions, and gear for Ukie soldiers. (I love ironic solutions.)
NATO never has and never will have any interest in a major land invasion into Russia. It’d take them a decade at least just to build up and configure for such, while their defensive role would be considerably compromised.
This assumes you could even get all the significant Euro members on board to spend something around 4% of their GDP’s on NATO for that long.
“Most Russians” are not the key.
Russian gov’t revenues (see Jan. 2023 report) are.
I guess you missed the various times that President Trump said NATO countries weren’t paying their fair share. Like all elite memberships, it isn’t free. Each member state pays for its own armed forces, and covers the costs of deploying its forces. Who is going to pay for Ukraine if they end up in NATO?
I love ironic solutions/situations too. Like how Germany invaded Russia in WWII to take control of their oil fields, lost the war, and ended up being reliant on Russia long-term, for their energy needs.
The crap these people are spewing about Russia today, is basically the same bullshit I heard when I was a kid in the 50's.
Gotta fan the flames of war. This is big reason why this conflict started in the first place. Nato bases equal nuclear missiles on Russia’s border.
When this present nazi vs Christian conflict ends, Ukraine will no longer exist. Hans Stoltenpoop is a wanker and an idiot.
NATO NEVER promised not to expand.
that’s simply not true
“This is not going to end well for anyone.”
I remember the Neocon Supporters here INSISTING that Ukraine would never enter NATO.
Funny thing is that they may well be right in the end, but not for the reason they claimed.
“Maybe if Putin was not set on restarting the CCCP this would not happen.”
