Why Nick Sirianni Cried
The Other McCain ^ | 13 Feb 2023 | Stacy McCain

Many people have commented on Philadelphia Eagles Coach Nick Sirianni, who broke down in tears during the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” before Sunday’s Super Bowl. Some interpreted Sirianni’s tears as evidence of his heartfelt patriotism, whereas I know what he was really crying about:

NO MORE FOOTBALL UNTIL SEPTEMBER!

Once the Super Bowl is over, we have to wait nearly seven months before there’s another football game, and even then, the early games are usually lame, especially in college football. Alabama kicks off its season Sept. 2 against Middle Tennessee State University, which isn’t a real team.

They don’t finalize the NFL schedule until spring, but in the meantime, pro football fans will have to endure weeks of blah blah blah from the pundits and commentators, with their “mock draft” scenarios and their wild speculations about possible trades and free agent signings, which is just annoying. Fans don’t want to hear a bunch of talk about football, we want to watch actual football. From September through January, there’s football every weekend — basically 20 weeks of it, including the college bowl games and the NFL playoffs. Fans develop a habit, a circadian rhythm of weekly football-watching — college games Saturday, pro games Sunday, then “Monday Night Football” and “Thursday Night Football”...

I know many here on FR are down on the NFL. And even college football to an extent too. But I have to admit I get a certain depression after the Super Bowl. Football is such a daily thing September through January and then poof! And still six weeks to baseball season. I get into hockey once the playoffs start (April). And NBA? Fugeddaboutit. Anyway, have at it Freepers!

Oh, and I sometimes tear up during the anthem..... Just because, it's the anthem you know?

Funny premise for this article. Read an article today that in addition to his reverence for the anthem he was thinking about the support of his wife and kids, the organization and of course the players brought him to stand on the sidelines at the Super Bowl. Sounds like a classy fellow to me.

As for my own self, i get misty eyed every time the anthem is sung. With one exception, Rosanne Barr’s version. Oh and i get misty eyed in the presence of bald eagles. Not ashamed to let it be known.

Interesting! During the singing of America Mr Sirianni was on film walking about and spitting a huge hocker onto the field? Yet during the Nat Anthem a few minutes later he is in tears with patriotism?

After enjoying college football’s now nearly-every-night season (thank you, Mid-American Conference for some great weeknight games!), I went directly to the NHL. Not a huge hockey fan, but I live in a very wintry area (particularly this very cold year), and watching hockey after a long day’s work, relaxing in a warm home with a few adult beverages, is very comforting.

Even so, my soul cries out for baseball. So glad pitchers and catchers are reporting for Spring Training this week. Play ball! Soon!

I’m always depressed when football ends too, albeit college football is my thing.

Damn, that was tacky! You can be sad to see the end of the football season, but mocking patriotism as the vehicle for doing so? NOT FUNNY!

"we have to wait nearly seven months before there’s another football game," No, WE do not have to wait. Hardly aware of it these days.
