In an ominous sign for the War in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin went to Volgograd, Russia today to speak on the 80th Anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Hitler’s Germany at the Battle of Stalingrad. The Soviets won the long, bloody battle with at least one million casualties.
Putin likened the battle then to Russia’s War in Ukraine, drawing on Germany’s promise to provide Leopard Tanks to Ukraine. He compared it to Nazi Germany’s use of tanks to attack the then Soviet Union.. . . .

The advantage that Russia has is that Putin is willing to destroy Ukraine.
“The advantage that Russia has is that Putin is willing to destroy Ukraine.”
Sounds like a good reason for the Neocons to NOT pick a fight with them...but Neocons are Neocons, so here we are.
Ukraine is, and has been, a failed state.
Its been strategically, ideologically and culturally divided as a play-thing between Russia, EU and US neocons, leading to weak institutions and the predation of political and financial parasites Kolomoisky, Medvechuck, the Bidens, nationalist Nazis who have little support but are manipulated by the West
Declining population, constant emigration, poorest country in europe.
Now it will cease to exist, even in name, as a divided country
The Stalingrad anology does not work in this day and age. The roles of Russia and the opposing forces are reversed. All of Ukraine is the Stalingrad of this age.
“Putin Speaks on 80th Anniversary of Soviets’ Stalingrad Victory; Ominous Sign for Ukraine”
How is that an ‘ominous sign’ for Ukraine?
Is Ukraine currently laying siege to Stalingrad?
Is Putin expecting a Ukrainian offensive at Stalingrad?
And why is Putin referring to Volgograd as ‘Stalingrad’? Does he miss the ‘good old days’ of the USSR that much? Wil St. Petersburg be renamed back to Leningrad?
Today it is the Russians who are playing the part of the Nazis, invading another country.
Yep. Putin’s comparison is just wrong. The defenders of Stalingrad were defending the city against a foreign invader. In the Ukraine case the Russians are the foreign invader.
Expecting a big Russian offensive in about 3 weeks.
For close to 1000 years it was simply part of Russia.
I would answer your questions as “none of the above” but I would still consider Putins’ comments as “ominous”.
No, there is not today a Stalingrad-grade assault/siege of Kiev, but the comment leads me, at least, to consider that Putin regards his total efforts as existential, not adventurous nor a “police” action. And that the losses in personnel and materiel are not to be measured day by day but rather in terms of overall effect. And the desired effect is victory for Russia and likely Ukraines’ humiliation (and thereby Putins’ aims) no matter the cost.
If you’re Russian you know someone or have relatives who fought the Nazis in WW II and the idea of German tanks rolling on the plains of Ukraine has to bring back horrible memories
So Putin is willing to slaughter an entire generation of Russian men so he can restore the Russian Empire.
Someone in Moscow really needs to kill this maniac.
Stalin never complained about meeting German tanks in Poland in ‘39.
Oh wait…we aren’t supposed to remember the whole war…just the part where they push back with American steel, arms, and bullets.
Oh brother. The “Hill to die on” a nation we have no signed agreement to help militarily, that is a nothing in the scope of the world. Ukraine is literally Russia, and we should accept that.
The truth is, it is where the Oligarchs of the West hide their secrets. Biolabs for making deadly pathogens, and a place to sell war equipment that WE THE PEOPLE PAID FOR, for these Oligarchs profit. Take it out of our pocket, give it to others.
BS
Ukraine has been a country longer than russia has
STOP WITH THE TRUTH, you will bring down the troops morale.
They mobilized half a million don’t ya know.
They called up 300,000 and how many people ran away?
To get 500,000 more, they would have to start shaking the bushes in Moscow and St Petersburg. Haven’t heard much about that. I guess they can afford to buy their way out of serving. Because Russia is more corrupt than Ukraine.
“The Soviets won the long, bloody battle with at least one million casualties.”
Well, back then the Russians were being invaded by an enemy bent on conquest, so they didn’t have any choice but to fight to the bitter end. Kind of like the position Ukraine is in today.
