SHOT Show 2023: NFA Silencer Numbers Continue to Rise
AmmoLand ^ | January 23, 2023 | Dean Weingarten

On January 18, 2023, at the SHOT Show, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) hosted a slide show on what has been happening in the National Firearms Act Division of the ATF.

This presentation did not explain the ramifications of the controversial “new rule” on stabilizing pistol braces. It was an overview of the internal happenings in the NFA division of the ATF.

This correspondent has seen many such presentations in other organizations in his career. There is useful information to be gained. Do not expect bureaucracies to air their “dirty laundry” in public.  Each agency and each division is going to do its best to present itself in a positive light. They will explain any shortcomings as something outside their control. They will convincingly explain why they need more resources and explain they are doing the best they can with the limited resources they have.

Some very interesting numbers were presented, showing how the workload of the NFA division has increased in the past few years.

A Fiscal Year (FY) is a one-year period during which the agency expends its annual budget. It is not the same as a calendar year. The Fiscal Year for the ATF (and most federal agencies) is from October 1st to September 30th.  FY 2020 started on October 1st, 2019, and ended on September 30th, 2020. FY 2021 started on October 1st, 2020, and ended on September 30, 2021. FY 2022 started on October 1st, 2021, and ended on September 30th, 2022.

The slides showed how many NFA applications were processed in the last three Fiscal Years up to September 30th, 2022. The FY 2019 number was taken from a previous report:

Silencers with the tax stamp required to make them legal, now number close to 4 million, and the numbers are growing.

It is difficult to argue they are not in common use.

I've got 2 in jail right now..

Tryin to keep what little hearing I have left.

.

Yes, I use hearing protection at the range. But not when hunting.

In a SANE world..

Silencers/ Suppressors. Would be non serialized/ non NFA.

Their use would be MANDATORY in most all circumstances (ranges/ recreational shooting) and as a matter of hearing protection and general nuisance abatement.

100% the same as a muffler on a car.

Someone should remind these folks, it is we the people. Not we the BATF. They work for us, we do not dance to their tune. And, all firearms laws and restrictions violate our constitutional rights.

What business does ATF have to make up new rules?
They should only act within the framework of existing laws, as enacted by congress, senate and signed by the president.
They should have NO power to create legislation of their own.

The entire NFA is an un-Constitutional scheme to deny 2nd Amendment rights. It’s should be thrown out entirely.

HELLO?
They are NOT “silencers”. They are suppressors. They suppress noise.
I expect a better job of writing a title from Dean Weingarten info.

"..Someone should remind these folks."

Yeah, I'm sure plenty of chest thumpin keyboard commando's do that very thing every day. In the meantime, while I'm waiting for this big come-uppance I've been hearing about pretty much since I've been on the net (late 90's), I'll go thru the process like I did before in the "W" years and try to keep some of my hearing. I don't disagree with your post. But that's "ideally". We left "ideal" a long time ago.

Y'all can lemme know when ya have a plan that doesn't involve following Fed assets into the belly of the beast..

I bought mine for a Class III SBR AR-15, back in 2003. It took 3mos for the rifle and suppressor to get the tax stamp, and for me to take possession. Still have them.

They were called silencers by the inventor, Hiram Maxim. They are called silencers in the law.

They suppress noise.

And muzzle flash. Not a big concern for civilians, but a big deal in some circles.

I exercise my 2nd amendment rites, daily. That’s about the best i can give. No one listens much to an old man these days. Keep your powder dry.
