Convenience store chain 7-Eleven has discovered that homeless people don’t like opera and classical music blaring in their ears as they beg for money, do drugs, or harass the locals. The practice launched in Canada and then San Francisco and several beach locales in Florida followed suit. Now, it’s a mainstream solution for business owners struggling to cope in certain neighborhoods. The immediate problem is that a whole lot of customers who buy Twinkies, lottery tickets, and slushies don’t much like that style of music either. Therein lies the rub.
“Studies have shown that the classical music is annoying. Opera is annoying, and I’m assuming they are correct because it’s working,” said franchise owner Jagat Patel of Austin, TX. Patel has had several complaints about the volume but noted that no police have shown up to tell him to turn it down.
Never underestimate the ingenuity of the capitalist mind: Exploiting a disdain for some music genres, 7-Elevens across the country are practicing this effective dispersal of the homeless — especially in Texas, where people tend to handle their problems without much permission from any government agency. So leave it to the Lone Star folks to use the aggressive and tinny tones of some pieces — like a scherzo from Schubert — to drive the unwashed masses to, say, a local Circle K store playing Barry Manilow’s greatest hits. Neurologists have long touted the benefits of music on the brain. When hearing a pleasant sound, dopamine is released, and mood is enhanced. Everyone knows this. The opposite is also true: Classical music is not everyone’s cup of tea, and when exposed to it, a lot of people avoid souring their pleasure centers by skedaddling. Genius. …

I see what you did there.
Hello Mudder, Hello Fadder...LOL Thank You.
This works for loitering teenagers as well. A blast of one of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos will send them off the nearest mall.
Classical music I’m good with.
Opera? UGH!!!! Can’t stand it.
A long time ago, I was driving around Houston on a Saturday morning. I tuned my radio way down to the left side of the FM band just to see what was there. It picked up the tv station that was broadcasting Buggs Bunny cartoons. Cool thing to be riding around listening to the audio of the cartoons. That is when I discovered the classical music in the shows. That was 1986 or so.
I have been streaming theclassicalstation.org out of north Carolina. Best lineup and deepest catalog in the country imho.
Michael Bolton over a loud speaker would make me piss blood.
Yes! Have you seen Disney’s Fantasia?
Not for a Long time
but I know The Sorcerers Apprentice is one of the highlight selections and Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain for the scary stuff if I recall. Great Music
Yoko would keep the the birds and the bees at bay & customers and employees away, the stores would all close

I can stand Baroque music for about 15 minutes tops.
I can tolerate chamber music for maybe 30 minutes.
I listen to baroque music all day. (one of the happy pleasures of being a harpsichordist) Baroque, Renaissance, Gallant, Classical, Romantic, Late Romantic, Impressionist, some other 20th Century, Neo-Romantic. Opera too.
It's 12 tone and dissonant *eek oork dink whrzzz* music that I can't stomach for even on minute, nor most pop music.
Jazz and bagpipe music is okay.
Youtube
Search Muzak
Here’s one
Very few commercials for some odd reason, but, it’s why I work out to.
Thanks! I’m going to enjoy listening to it!
Also, there was a lot of subtle adult humor in those cartoons that a kid would not pick up on.
Note: It’s WCPE on the Tune In app
And mighty mouse
Opera!
Thank you. I don’t use apps. Not sure why people do?
Because I can use them to play music through the stereo using my Roku TV using iHeart, TuneIn, Spotify, Pandora or Amazon Music apps. I have a Kenwood amp running Vandersteen speakers and the sound is amazing. I tried using a laptop but the 3.5mm jack goes bad so quickly.
The TV in my man cave is only used for music. WDAV (Davidson College) is also good for Classical.
