So far, he's been identified as a *gasp* Libertarian.

That's not going to cut it. This has to be made into a hate crime, preferably racially motivated.
He may have planned to kill them but didn’t know where they lived or the layout of their house. That would explain using the knife (very personal) but killing the two other roommates (not knowing the layout of the house).
I thought the layout of the house was online as a virtual tour?
Two possibilities. If it was his first time seeing where they lived he may not have had time to get the layout. And even if he had the layout he would not have known which rooms the girls had.
