How Diversity Conceals More Than It Reveals. The case for truly equal opportunity in higher education.

Offices with titles such as “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” have become common in business, government, and universities. Employees are sometimes required to take courses in diversity training, and, in some well-known cases, employees have been dismissed for refusing to participate.

In spite of its widespread use in college admissions, and in hiring and promotion decisions in business and government, the exact meaning of “diversity” remains unclear. Yet diversity issues are important, as evidenced in part by the Supreme Court’s recent discussion of the legality of using affirmative action to pursue diversity goals.

Proportional Representation

Proponents of making greater diversity compulsory have an implicit theory that, in the absence of discrimination, all demographic groups would be represented in all activities in the same proportion as their share of the general population. Deviations from proportionality are thus interpreted as measures of discrimination.

Critics refer to proportional representation as the Fallacy of Disparities. It doesn’t logically follow that, just because there is a statistical disparity, the explanation must be discrimination. As I point out here, American women have longer lives than do men on average, but there is no reason to attribute that disparity to discrimination for or against either group.

Furthermore, proponents do not distinguish between equal opportunities and equal results. In an apocryphal story, Senator Bernie Sanders returned from watching a basketball game depressed because one team had scored more point than its opponent. What is wrong with this unequal outcome, if both teams had equal opportunities to win? Anyone who has been a student or teacher knows that, even if all students are treated equally, they do not produce equal test performances.

DEI imposes racial/gender/identity quotas. White males need not apply. Not complicated.

Diversity means anti white male, and don’t pay attention to those Asians.

It is an article of faith among Marxists that there is no genetic component to ability, that you can grab any random proletariat child and turn him into an accomplished nuclear physicist with the right education.

Saw diversity policies for 30 years working for the fed gov.

All it did was negatively impact the mission and cause animosity in the ranks.

The fact that it was US Navy aviation maintenance still amazes me that there was never a class A mishap and those policies never caused a loss of aircrew.

I picked the “hardest” ASVAB job in the USAF.

Only 2 women and 2 blacks in the entire career field when I was in. Small AFSC as well.

I work in electrical distribution design now, which is extremely white male as well.

It’s just far easier to work with one’s “own kind” and not worry about what you do or say...

I’m glad I grew up in a time where the best players made the team, the best of those were starters, the smartest kids got the scholarships and the most valuable, knowledgeable and hard working employees got the raises and promotions.

And if you didn’t qualify you worked harder to improve.

What a concept right?

Sad that it’s quickly becoming a lost way of life in this country.

It all doesn’t matter. The goal of all this communist agitation is ‘Get Whitey’. People stop trying to figure it out and start arming up and armoring your house. There is no debating people who want you dead or their slaves.

Getting cut from basketball gave me the foundation of pushing myself which exists to this day.

Part was always there, and part was fostered.

As a young kid, I got to go to a gifted school one day a week.
It was cool. We did all kinds of different things and I don’t remember even getting grades.
Painting, dissection, outside group play, etc...

This is what drives the complete withdrawal of so many young white men from the mainstream, whether in schools, workplaces, religious institutions - all have failed them, and they’re not playing any more. They’d rather take care of themselves and die penniless and childless than fit into the new scheme of things, and it isn’t hard to see the implications of their withdrawal.

Disparate impact is a curse on everyone, from those it attempts to help (by excusing behaviors and choices that lead to disparate outcomes) and those it takes away from (clear violation of equal protection).
