NEAR PAYSON, Ariz. - Officials with the Coconino County Sheriff's Office say three people are dead after they fell through the ice while walking on a frozen lake near Payson.

The incident happened on the night of Dec. 26 at Woods Canyon Lake, which is located about 34 miles east of Payson. According to a statement released by officials with CCSO, deputies stationed at a substation in the area were called to the lake, after two men and a woman were walking on the frozen lake and fell through the ice.

"Responding Deputies and Fire units were able to pull the female from the water and administer life saving measures but were unsuccessful," read a portion of the statement. "The search continues for the two male individuals."

On Tuesday, the sheriff's office said the bodies of the missing men had been recovered around 1 p.m.

They chose poorly. It hasn't snowed in Arizona for weeks and the weather has been warmer in the past few days.

Immersion in water that is near freezing will suck the life out of you in seconds. You’ll lose ability to move and then drown.

I can think of some. You have to know some over weight people though. Start off with the lighter of the overweights and work up. Remember you have to weigh less than all your test weight folks. Also, no hot springs in the lake, pond, river, and etc. y’all have a nut. 🥴

Ice even remotely thick to be tempting must be pretty rare in Arizona. No?

Thanks for the info. Will probably never need it, I live in AZ. Phoenix not northern AZ. I am very familiar with Woods Canyon Lake. (summertime only)

I would never knowingly go out on deep water ice. It just creeps me out too much.

Identities not released. Were they of the “undocumented democrat” persuasion? Out for a little stroll north of the border?

Yeah, I imagine a “frozen lake in Arizona” is quite an ephemeral thing...

We always sent our big dog out first. Then, big rocks. This was in Texas where frozen ponds were rare before globull warming.

Yes, first you send your smallest kid out onto the lake. If he survives, then you send the next biggest kid, etc...

If you walk on it and you fall through, then it’s not safe.
