UNC-System Employees Really Love Democrats. Lopsided financial contributions indicate dwindling ideological diversity.

While North Carolina is often considered a “purple state,” the composition of UNC-System campaign contributions is anything but bipartisan. OpenSecrets data indicate that campaign contributions to Democrats among UNC-System employees outweighed those to Republicans by more than 20 to 1 in the 2020 and 2022 election cycles.

The total dollar amount of UNC-System political contributions per election cycle has generally increased since 1990. However, the 2020 election cycle stands out, as more than three times as much money was contributed to campaigns during that election season than in any other cycle on record. Perhaps attributable to the divisive nature of the Trump vs. Biden race and the general anti-Trump sentiment within academia, this exorbitant spending returned to normal levels in the 2022 cycle.

OpenSecrets data also show significant lobbying activity by the UNC System between 2019 and 2022. Driven primarily by spending from UNC-Chapel Hill, the UNC System lobbied extensively for the American Rescue Plan, the nearly $2 trillion economic stimulus bill passed on strictly partisan lines in 2021. The bill included nearly $40 billion in grants for higher-education institutions.

Despite the ups and downs in total spending over time, the throughline in the data is the discrepancy between contributions to Democrats and contributions to Republicans. Total contributions to Republicans are outweighed by a significant factor in every election cycle recorded by OpenSecrets. In 2020, 95.34 percent of contributions went to Democrats, and 4.66 percent went to Republicans. The size of the disparity varies across the individual institutions of the UNC System, but it is nevertheless omnipresent.

In the 2020 election cycle, UNC Pembroke had the most even partisan distribution of campaign contributions, with 58.5 percent going to Democrats and 40.4 percent going to Republicans.

Cut their pay!

If "educators" are being paid so much that after bills they have enough for political contributions, they are being paid too much.

Not surprised. Academics live in Camelot mentality.
Diversity, inclusivity etc are Camelot principles.
Remember John Lennon’s song”Imagine”? It said a world wothout boundaries, no religion, no heaven or hell, just people loving each other. Very Utopian mindset.

You don’t get it. Educators are paid well, so that they can contribute more to liberal candidates. The liberal candidates make laws which makes it easy to obtain student loans. That allows colleges to jack up tuition. Then Biden offers them loan forgivance for student loans. Very nice money laundering scheme with tax payers footing the bill.

Somebody has to pick up the tab. There is no free lunch. The tax payers get caught holding the bag.

That’s how vermin work. The low achievers can do nothing unless hired by an agency with low standards. If this agency hires them, they will support that agency.

Now, let’s think...what agency has the lowest standards of all kinds in this country?

If you guessed American universities and publik skoolz, you’re very close and yes, their standards are close the lowest possible. However, there is an even sleazier one. Try again.

Bazinga, you got it!

Thankfully lopsided Democrat control of education only happens in BLUE STATES, not in Red States, like Texas, so I don’t need to worry about it.

I’m surprised the ratio is so low. I graduated from UNC Char-latte in 2006. I had many left-wing professors mocking and deriding Christians and Conservatives, and using paid instruction time to spew their bile at a captive audience.

It was across every field I had classes in— political science, history, education, philosophy, religion, communications.

Guess the Pembroke 'Pretendians' live more in reality than the Research Triangle techno-offspring...
I avoid Chapel Hill as much as possible myself...

It’s the “Big Education” cycle

1) make massive federal loans to students
2) raise tuition and fees to vacuum up the money
3) pay profs and admins big salaries
4) profs and admins donate to Democrats

and repeat `
