Rich Taxpayers Moving Away from NYC [semi-satire]
Semi-News/Semi-Satire ^ | 18 December 2022 | John Semmens

A demographic analysis of persons emigrating from New York City found that 16% of of richest taxpayers are leaving each year. The impact on the City's ability to fund government services is becoming severe.

Mayor Eric Adams hasn't been idle, but his request for more federal aid doesn't seem likely to be fulfilled. "My recent phone conversation with President Biden was not encouraging," the Mayor lamented. "When I pointed out that we need a replacement for the lost tax revenues he suggested that we confiscate the property of everyone who moves out of the city. He said 'if that doesn't change their mind about leaving you'll be able to get money from selling these properties. The old Soviet Union did this and became the second-most powerful country in the world. You could also use the seized properties to house all the immigrants we will be sending you after Title 42 is abolished.'"

Adams found the President's suggestions "unhelpful. He has nukes. I don't." Adams also explicitly rejected suggestions from Republicans that lower tax rates would generate more revenues, calling this approach "inequitable. Social justice requires that higher-earners be taxed at higher rates. Even if that leads to lower revenues, the suffering would be more fairly distributed among rich and poor alike."

California is proposing to lay taxes on everyone who leaves the state for up to ten years after they leave. And that’s no joke!

Ten years ago we had two Franchise Tax Board agents show up at our place in WYOMING demanding proof that we lived in Wyoming and they wanted taxes for the years after we’d left California.

The Park County Sheriff’s Department told them to leave and never come back. So far, so good.

But the point is that California thinks they have to right to extort taxes from people who leave and now they want to codify that belief. New York and NYC won’t be far behind.

It is a government’s primary purpose to collect taxes.

Everything else that it does, including any services or infrastructure that it provides is merely there to try to legitimize it’s primary purpose.

It is NOT a government for the people. Quite the opposite.

If you attempt to flee high taxes, even though you have left their jurisdiction and no longer avail yourself of their services, it is still your obligation (in their perspective) to pay them. That is why you exist.

When Rose Kennedy died, she was legally a resident of Florida, a state she had not visited in eleven years. Massachusetts just passed an amendment to the state constitution to allow graduated taxes. The proponents sent out flyers with Abigail Johnson’s (among others) photo on it. Abigail Johnson (Fidelity) won’t pay Massachusetts income tax anymore than Rose Kennedy did. She will just change her legal residence to Florida, or the Bahamas.

These people are both crazy and vicious.

The other reason people move to Florida is because they are going to file for bankruptcy.

IF you declare bankruptcy in Florida they can not take your PRIMARY residence. This happened to a major commercial real estate developer here in NH around 1990. She moved to Florida, and bought a multi million dollar house declared bankruptcy.
She stuck all the local banks with millions in bad commercial real estate loans. All of those banks have different names on them now.
Many closed in early 1990s. One is a restaurant now.

I did work out-of-state for a California company. My employer withheld State tax from my paycheck. After I left that company, the California Tax Franchise Board insisted I file tax returns, and prove my residency out of state.

I wrote back "Fine, tell me where I vote for California State offices." Crickets after that, and they REFUNDED the withheld funds!

It’s not satire. It’s happening in spades.
