It would appear Disney is losing its ability to attract people on its brand name alone.
According to Bounding Into Comics, Disney has yet another flop on its hands in the form of “Strange World,” the story of a man with a famous father who must go looking for him. The movie has everything required of it by the standards of today’s social justice crowd, but this one also includes a very open gay teen romance that is celebrated by the main character in a very over-the-top fashion.
As Bounding reports, the movie performed miserably over Thanksgiving weekend, bringing in a pathetic $18.6 million. This is a massive failure considering the cash it took to make it:
Not only did the film fail to meet original expectations, but it reportedly has a production budget between $135 million and $180 million. Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro reported, “Strange World cost $135M before P&A.” Meanwhile Variety’s Rebecca Rubin reported, “The $180 million-budgeted “Strange World” is poised to be another money loser for Disney.”
That means the film has to make between $335 million and $450 million to break even.
According to an article from Variety, the film was yet another attempt at normalizing LGBT relationships, this time between two teen boys. In the film, the moment is well-received by friends and an over-enthusiastic father:
Walt Disney screened three sequences from “Strange World.” In the first, Ethan flirts with heartthrob Diazo while friends from school look on, teasing in a friendly and warm-hearted way. Much to Ethan’s chagrin, his dad Searcher soon joins in, embarrassing his son with an overeager show of acceptance.
It could be said that the lack of advertising for this film is probably what caused it to bomb. Indeed, Disney seemed to put little to no effort into making sure you knew the film was there to see, and many of you probably didn’t even know Disney had a new film out.
However, it’s a wonder if anyone would have gone to see it if there was advertising for it regardless. It certainly would have boosted the numbers a little, but probably not enough to stop it from being the flop it was. The question is: Did Disney know it was going to be a flop before it even came out.
Some clues point to yes as Bounding quotes film critic “OMB Reviews,” who noted that Disney seemed to slip this movie in quietly, LGBT promotion and all, while noise was being made by everything else around it.
“Even if that [gay son] wasn’t a part of the story the fact is that this is a film that is featuring a brand new original, somewhat original story, coming out over Thanksgiving weekend up against the third weekend of Black Panther. It’s almost as if Disney wanted this film to do poorly.”
The question then is: Why did Disney release this movie in the first place if they knew it was going to be so bad? The company used to be one of quality and innovation, but it’s now replaced those virtues with virtue signaling. This is what is considered to be on the cutting edge of entertainment now.
Yet, they purposefully allowed this movie to release when it would have definitely made the fewest waves. Did Disney do it because they wanted to avoid what would clearly be another massive wave of backlash for attempting to push an agenda on people’s children? If so, this has some interesting implications for Disney’s direction going forward.
We might never get the answer from Disney as to the reason behind this clearly calculated move, but regardless of the answer, none of this looks good for Disney. Not only did they release a flop, but they also plugged in another LGBT scene, and this is only going to make parents dislike them more. It should also be noted that slapping the Disney label on the film wasn’t enough to entice many who had heard about it to see it.
Disney is sinking, and sinking quickly.
The money does not matter to them the audience does not matter to them
Hmm. a friend asked. Who produced ‘Crazy Rich Asians’.
Let it continue to sink then. Iger is committed to more Grooming storytelling so do it. To think as kid back in the 1960’s Disney was a wholesome company that put out some really good product.
This movie, concept, cast, and budget was most likely approved of when Bob (Here I Come 2 Save the DAY!!) Iger was the big boss.
Disney executives need to keep that in mind as they welcome Iger’s return practically throwing rose petals in front of his path. Iger, in some ways is MORE progressive than the past CEO, who was so abruptly booted off the stage last week.
Maybe BOB is different this time. Maybe this old leopard really can change his spots.
Eventually that could really add up to something!
Crazy Rich Asians made a lot of money. Asian audience was built in and it got women as it was rom com and chicks like expensive crap. Was a hit.
Problem with animation is it costs a ton so they need a wide audience and they need kids there. Parents read reviews and check out what a film is, “Gay kiss, lesbians, woke, etc.”
Nah!
And doesn’t matter that only 40-60% of parents would say that. They have to run the table and get the opening weekend numbers to stay afloat.
There’s also the loss of toy revenue, park revenue. With a flop like this, no ‘action figures’ being sold. No theme park rides. Nothing.
So the loss is 100-150 million in cash outlay. But look at the opportunity cost to their business.
Little Mermaid has a ride at Disney to this day. That film was from the 1980s. They’re doing a new version (with a black mermaid, of course) but it’s still of great value to them. Ariel costumes and toys still sell and they did spinoff cartoons and direct to video sequels.
So instead of making a PRODUCT they can SELL because they are a freakin BUSINESS beholden to the bottom line and stockholders, they make crap that loses money, creates no revenue stream, harms the brand, and do that enough times? Out of business.
But libs take over HR departments. They then do ‘training’ to weed out conservatives. They only hire super lib little communists. Then they really don’t care about the bottom line. It’s all about the cause and the business is just there to help them with that cause.
What cause? Disney came out against the anti-grooming law in Florida. They promote queerness, transgenderism, globalism, communism, China first - America last, and Satanism. All that = ‘core values’ for them.
And once that has been "normalized," the next film would portray in a positive light a "relationship" between a teen boy and the crusty old school custodian.
Because: Why not?!
Regards,
Crazy Rich Asians...I thought...turned into a decent 2-star comedy.
My impression of this weird cartoon piece...script sounds like something that a 16-year old kid would write, and they seem to have put a lot of money into this...with nothing much to show...other than big-name actors doing the voices.
If you add the lackluster interest in cruises at present...being in a recession with parks drawing marginal crowds...Disney needs the movie and streaming video business to make up for losses. This was not a brilliant idea. Maybe in the background, they made a x-rated edition of the cartoon and hope that this sells better than this version.
Singing “We’ve only just begun” to destroy this leftist organization.
Boycott Disney
What is amazing is they lose $100 million and still do not go under. These corporations simply have to much money and way to many people are supporting them.
Still wondering if this movie was in reality a money laundering scam...
I am starting to think some corporations are doing this stuff because they are being strong-armed by Government and other Elites.
I also wonder if Disney is somehow going to get a back door Government bailout (of some kind) to mitigate this losses. It would be outrageous if true, but nothing would surprise me.

Well, when you’ve got health systems and government agencies funneling money for ballot harvesting, one wonders...
Disney’s institutional shareholders won’t give a (bleep), but the small fry could and should...
One theory (from another article): Now, many are wondering if higher-ups at the Disney corporation took this as a sign to walk away from the “risk” in the future, so when people complain about the lack of LBGT+ representation, they can point to the lack of commercial success “Strange World” and “Lightyear” had as a reason to avoid diverse representation.
Meanwhile “The Chosen” (basically a big screen release of the 1st 2 episodes of a TV series about Jesus, the Apostles & other followers) came in either 2nd or 3rd over the first weekend of limited release and is still doing surprisingly well. Have seen very little mention of this movie in the mainstream media.
They have to choose between pursuing political causes and pursuing profits.
Notice they ran it against Wakanda-town. Disney sees the voting demographics changing too. They know they have lost us, and LGBQTXYZPDQ is in their hip pocket, cause let’s face it, gays loved Disney before Disney started actively grooming. Now it’s giving the BLMers a shot at being a Disney player again
