On this date in 1986, during the opening months of a guerrilla war that would last until 1992, a 70-man detachment of Suriname soldiers raided the village of Moiwana, home of the rebel leader Ronnie Brunswijk, and massacred dozens of people.
Sealing the roads, the team went house to house for four hours, torching houses and slaughtering any of the Ndyuka civilians who couldn’t escape into the surrounding jungle.
“Everyone was shot — the unarmed women, pregnant women, a baby barely seven months old,” goes the account in Memre Moiwana, a publication of the NGO Moiwana ’86. “No distinctions were made.” Some were mowed down with automatic weapons; others slashed to death with machetes. Diversity is our strength.
Ronnie Brunswijk (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈrɔni ˈbrʏnsʋɛik]; born 7 March 1961) is a Surinamese politician, businessman, footballer, convicted drug trafficker,[4] former rebel leader, and the current Vice President of Suriname. Brunswijk served in the early 1980s as the personal bodyguard of Dési Bouterse, who overthrew the government in 1980 in a military coup. Brunswijk was discharged after asking for a raise, and denied back pay.[2] In 1985, Brunswijk formed the Surinamese Liberation Army, better known as the Jungle Commando.

Suriname sounds like the epitome of a banana republic. Somebody should make a movie about this place. The current President might be ok. He is a rule of law guy. Dictator Bouterse has been sentenced to prison in absentia for his role in the December Murders. Wikipedia did not say where he is now.
Want to bet who funded him?
Suriname—east of Venezuela, formerly Dutch Guiana. Very diverse population with “Maroons” (21%) outnumbering “White” (1%)
Thanks for the obscure history lesson of the day.
Gotta go with: Not my circus....
The world’s history is full of such acts.
Ronnie and Desi Bouterse were funded by the Cubans and the Russians.
Ronnie Brunswijk joined the Suriname National Army at the age of 18. He was considered a good soldier, and was sent to Cuba for commando training. On 25 February 1980, Bouterse, Horb, and fourteen other sergeants overthrew the Henck Arron government with a violent military coup d’état, now known as the Sergeants Coup.
And much worse.
My first thought was only 38.
