You don't have to like soccer to maybe have a little interesting in the Tuesday match between the USA and Iran in the World Cup, in a loser leave town match. I was never a hockey fan until the USA team with a bunch of college players defeated the hated Russians in the 1980 Winter Olympics, I was throwing things at the TV when the hated Russians defeated the USA basketball team in the 1972 Summer Olympics, in an obvious case of cheating. International sports competitions are a lot more fun when the nations playing each other have a hatred and conflict between them. I will definitely be watching on Tuesday.

I watched the US/UK match from beginning to end, I did not see much if anything of what you are describing.
My point, when politics and hatred between countries make it interesting regardless of the sport, especially when the USA has to win, or they go home.
I’m not a big soccer fan, but certain matches make it interesting, and this is one of them.
If you watch any of the other matches, no coach is wearing anything promoting their country. Many of the other coaches are not even citizens of the country they are coaching, especially the African Countries.

I didn't make much of that. I'm seeing that in college football too. It's more of a brevity thing than a statement. For example, Mississippi State fans are wearing shirts saying just "State" -- the context being you're not for that other Mississippi team.
Besides, even if the USMNT coach meant it like you say, I'm cool with a states' rights message. LOL
Iran is probably gonna eliminate US tomorrow anyway.
Meanwhile, every other team emphatically sing their national anthems.
