Marjorie Taylor Greene supports Kevin McCarthy's bid for House speaker, says it's a 'bad strategy' for fellow Republicans to challenge him

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene expressed support for Rep. Kevin McCarthy's bid for House speaker . Greene criticized the possibility of fellow conservative Republicans challenging McCarthy . "Well, I actually think that's a bad strategy," she said on Monday.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene on Monday expressed support for Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy's bid for House speaker as rumors swirl about the Republican conference's hard-line conservative wing mounting a challenge against him.

"Well, I actually think that's a bad strategy when we're looking at having a very, razor-thin majority, with potentially 219. We're talking about one vote," Greene said on Steve Bannon's "War Room" podcast about reports of House Freedom Caucus Republicans, such as Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona, considering challenging McCarthy.

Midterm results are still trickling in, though Republicans appear on track to control the House. McCarthy, widely seen as the frontrunner for the top post, needs 218 votes to earn the speakership come January 3, 2023, when the new Congress begins. But, under a likely narrow majority, McCarthy would need to win over almost every Republican, including members of the influential House Freedom Caucus, to become speaker.

"It's very, very risky right now to produce a leadership challenge, especially for speaker of the House," Greene said, warning that some moderate Republicans could join Democrats and propose outgoing Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming as speaker. Cheney, a staunch critic of former President Donald Trump, lost her reelection, but could technically become House speaker if she receives enough votes, though such a move is uncommon.

“...vying for him to let her back in the tent.”

He has already promised her restored committee assignments.

Then what is Trump’s excuse? And Remember that Trump endorsed McCarthy for Speaker when they still were expecting a large GOP majority in the House...

"She’s probably right. Plus, her backing him early means a better chairmanship which could produce something."

Helloooo??? He's been House Majority Whip, House Minority Leader, House Republican Chief Deputy Whip, Leader of the House Republican Conference. What the hell has he accomplished during the 13 years total that he's held those positions? Now he wants to be Speaker?

In January 2021 he said he was in favor of Liz Cheney remaining as Chairwoman of the House GOP Conference. By April 2021, when asked whether Cheney’s a good fit for House GOP leadership, his reply was ‘That’s a question for the conference.’ Non-committal, straddling-the-fence hogwash. Yet, when it comes to President Trump, he has no problem saying what he thinks in private conversations. In April of 2022, Matt Gaetz criticized McCarthy after he was heard on an audio leak, saying that Donald Trump should have resigned over the January 6th "riot."

Matt Gaetz slams Kevin McCarthy for support of Liz Cheney after audio leak: ‘Should have trusted my instincts’

The guy is a phony...talks out of both sides of his mouth like Lindsey Graham. They are cut from the same mold. Personally, I don't really give a shit who is Speaker, because it will only be more of the same do-nothing horse manure.

I left the Republican Party after 40+ years, not long after January 6th, and will never be a registered Republican again. I can't stay in a party that doesn't give two shits if my ballot is disenfranchised by voter fraud. They are complicit in it all. The only individual I will ever vote for again is Donald Trump. He was the first GOP Candidate since Reagan, that I didn't have to hold my nose to vote for. And to be truthful, I hope he doesn't run again, because the GOP doesn't deserve him, and neither does the country. He sacrificed a lot when he ran the first time. Is still being harassed and bombarded with lawsuits, and legal threats, all because he happened to win an election. I really don't want to see him going through that again. He should just enjoy the rest of his years in peace and quiet, watching his youngest son grow into a man, and become successful, and be content, that for a short while, he did Make America Great Again.

Another tea leaf reader. Splitting the R vote for Speaker gives it to Pelosi. That is the opposite of good. To get rid of McCarthy required a stampede behind one person (Jim Jeffords would be my pick).

McCarthy promised her that she would get her committee assignments back.

Smells like a quid pro quo.

No such luck. But if we keep the thread going, we might get to see BuddhaBrown post “Trump too” or some variant a few more times.

She phoned into War Room a little while ago and justified her position (working with Gantz-FL) that the Dems could peel-off a few turncoats (such as the R-Reps that supported Jan-6) and elect a Democratic speaker of the house.

That's weak. The vote for Speaker isn't until the new Congress convenes in January. Right now it's all about mounting a campaign internally to get your choice in there and once that campaign is over, the party gets behind the winner for the eventual vote. Knowing, however, such a campaign is doomed because the House RINOs will give up the Speakership rather vote for a conservative, MTG must figure she has a shot of getting out of the wilderness by supporting McCarthy like this.

Could this be why she's pushing making McCarthy Speaker?

"He endorsed McCarthy for Speaker just a few days ago."

Sorry to hear he did that. I love the man, but he's opening himself up to getting stabbed in the back again if he decides to run for President. McCarthy is two-faced.

By cheating in enough elections against MAGA candidates and to keep the Republican numbers low, we get a RINO Speaker and the illusion of party loyalty. What BS!

It’s like the Democrats have us over the barrel!! Totally depressing...I can understand her explanation, and didn’t realize that in going for a more conservative person we may end back up with Pelosi...
Not sure how the rest of you are doing emotionally but personally I have been in tears... literally!!!!

First significant issue I’ve disagreed with her about. McCarthy is a RINO and must go.

"Trump too."

That's a decision he will have to live with if he runs again. Tomorrow night, I hope he says he's not going to run in 2024. I love Trump, but getting stabbed in the back by your own party, and its Congressional members once is bad enough, but to put yourself in the position to get stabbed in the back again by those same individuals is just plain masochistic.

Impeachment is an utter waste of time unless it can be made to stick or have a reasonable chance of success. Thin margins in the House, and nothing in the Senate make it impossible, unless the Democrats really do want to jettison Biden and advance the brain-dead Harris.

Trying to impeach Biden or embarrass the Democrat party is futile. He won’t get impeached unless they decide they want him impeached, and they are incapable of embarrassment. If they did impeach him, the media would simply suppress everything, so there wouldn’t even be a PR advantage gained.

There is already, and has been for some time, a glut of damning information that would have long ago sunk any non-Democrat lower than whale dung. It is all out there for anyone to see. But talk to an average citizen about what is known, and they know nothing about any of it, or very little.

There are plenty of reasons to detest McCarthy, but that isn’t one of them, in my opinion. I dislike him for his backstabbing of Trump. And that is enough for me, all the other reasons are just icing on the cake. But I doubt McCarthy is going anywhere.

So lets say you were a member of Congress. Who would you vote for? Knowing of course that if you and a few others did not vote for McCarthy, you’re going to get either Nancy Pelosi or Lynn Cheney for speaker?
