PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler released details on a new plan that would ban unsanctioned camping that is intended to get people experiencing homelessness more access to services.

The plan, made up of five resolutions, will go before the city council next Wednesday.

Part of the plan would implement a citywide ban on unsanctioned camping, while also opening up designated areas for camps that would have better access to services, food, and hygiene and be managed 24-7. The plan also looks to invest in services, increase affordable housing, and work with county, Metro, state, and federal partners to support the action.

Mayor Wheeler said they've tried several methods over the years that have not worked, and that it is time to take bold action to move people closer to the services they need.
