While the United States contends with the newly detected COVID omicron BQ.1 subvariants, another highly mutated strain of the coronavirus called XBB is tearing across Southeast Asia, where in some countries, it has caused the number of cases to double in a day.
Some more sensationalist reports have called XBB a “ nightmare variant ” due to its apparent ability to evade immunity and dampen some therapies. But infectious disease experts say it is too soon to jump to such broad conclusions.
“That is pretty irresponsible reporting because it’s impossible to know what all these variants mean,” said UC Berkeley infectious disease expert John Swartzberg.
“We are seeing a slew of new variants that are using a similar approach to survive — they are finding ways to evade the way we get immunity from vaccines and previous infection with changes on the spike protein,” he said. “XBB is no different from the others.”
The subvariant was first detected in August in India and has since been sequenced in more than 17 countries, including Bangladesh, Japan and Singapore, where it has caused cases to spike at an alarming rate.

I found it interesting the SF Chronicle was downplaying it. It was ‘oh my! We’re all going to die’ when Trump was in office. Now it’s ‘no big deal.’

Well, there isn’t enough time to use it to effect voting, so they have to downplay it, since it’s mainly the Leftists that fear it. If they thought there was a new China Syndrome spreading, they’d stay home.

Exactly, the root of all these problems is...government and inept government workers. If only we could scale back government by about half, we’d have half the problems they cause.

That was Boston University. It supposedly killed 80% of the mice exposed to it. I thought this article might have been a reference to that when I first saw it.
A new pandemic is necessary to hoble the country when the libs are out of power. That’s all this is. Except possibly the Soros/Gates group has released another bioweapon. Then all bets are off.
I know it’s farfetched, but supposed people are fully vaccinates are at the most risk by these new variants.
Meaning, maybe not this variant but some future variant could be really serious for people who are fully vaccinated, let’s say the mortality rate rose to 20%, you really would have a catastrophe at that point.
I’m not predicting anything just throwing around ideas.

1) In the US, counting has changed. You cannot look at today’s Covid death count and get useful information. Local govts are not funding the effort to get the information tabulated immediately. It trickles in. So you have to look back a few weeks to see an accurate measure of that point in time. You cannot get an accurate measure of today until a few weeks from now. This is not only the US, but mostly.
2) In January of this year, the DNC could foresee a very bad mid-term election upcoming. They commissioned a study of what they might do to lessen the damage. The response from the relevant surveys spoke to one thing above all else (remember, this was January) and that was Get The Virus Off The Front Page and stop being associated with it.
Immediately, the MSM took their new DNC orders and we stopped getting daily Covid stories, despite a very high daily Covid death count at that time. Then Ukraine started and this helped with the headlines.
3) As for this new variant, about 5 weeks ago Japan was spiking their daily Covid death count to higher levels than they have seen since the virus arrived in the world.

Taiwan’s Covid death numbers are similarly ascendant.
The new variant seems to be in those places. It has not reached the rest of the world yet, though Germany, France and Italy are seeing Covid death upticks — more likely from winter than the variant.
4) We have about 350 Covid daily deaths right now. If we had never seen 3000 and 1500 in previous years, there would be an outcry at losing 350 more older Americans every day than in pre Covid years. Winter hasn’t arrived here yet. This year’s spike was January/February, delayed a month or two from 2020.
