Many financial institutions offer an on-line tool that is automatically linked to the bank accounts. Your mother should check her bank's website to see if they have any money management tool offerings. They are usually free.

"My step mom uses quicken to do her finances with, but is getting tired of the continual price increases, I was hoping folks that do their own finances might know of software that works for windows format that isn't outrageous. I use Excel myself, but apparently she want's something a bit more user friendly"

97 cents. Good for several years.

I have been quicken user for more decades than I can count. Probably 40 years. The new membership route is disappointing to me because I would go five years without buying an update. However the quality of the Quicken software is the best it’s ever been and has improved greatly ever since the annual membership started. I was looking for substitutes 4 to 5 years ago when the memberships were starting and could not find anything that came close. For example, at its most basic level, quicken is my check writing software. I cannot find another software that will do that. And I do still write checks and will continue to.

I have been using Money Manager Ex for years. It is not as bloated as Quicken and it is free for home use. It works on Windows and Linux.

Price is the same every year after you buy it.

Microsoft Money is quite good for those with uncomplicated tracking needs.I suspect you can still get it on ebay (most likely really cheap) and it only works on Windows machines.

Older versions of Quicken are standalone software you bought and owned, not a subscription service. They still work fine.

FWIW, I have been using the same version, Quicken 2000 Basic, v 9.0, since 2003. Have never paid a penny for it.

Does the job for me. I use it in place of my paper checking register. My local bank does all the check writing. I’ve got several escrow accounts I transfer funds among.

No complaints here about an old version of Quicken.

I’m using Quicken 2004. Paid once with no annual fees.

You can probably get older versions of Quicken on eBay or elsewhere.
