Russian losses in the eight-month-old Ukraine War could be wildly higher than anything Moscow will admit to — or anything I dared report might be possible.
“Irrevocable losses,” Russian-language news site iStories claims, “may amount to more than 90 thousand people.” That’s according to iStories’ inside sources, reportedly “a former officer of the Russian special services, the second is an active FSB officer.”
iStories was founded in neighboring Latvia two years ago by Russian journalists in response to the Kremlin’s growing crackdown on independent news.
An irrecoverable loss, as detailed by the report, is a soldier “who died, went missing, died of wounds or injured that prevent them from returning to military service.”
If iStories is correct, Russian losses are approximately half of the estimated 190,000 men sent into Ukraine on strongman Vladimir Putin’s order on February 23.
Then there are the material losses, but maybe those are a subject for another day.

The source underlying these stories seems to never be named.
Russia(USSR) lost something like 20 million in WW II.
...he may consider that an acceptable loss.
A more sinister mind might even say an intentional loss.
truly horrific losses. putin clearly does not care about russians, the russian people at all
he is serving his negative ego, his made up, puffed up sense of who he wishes he was
may things only get worse for putin
may it be so!
Putin will have fewer but better Russians. (Like what Ninotchka said of Stalin’s purges.)
Exactly. Don’t know if I’d stick my reputation on the pronouncements of a Latvian blogger claiming anonymous sources.
Some analysts have claimed that this war was avoidable had Russia not felt that Ukraine might join NATO. I don’t know if this is true. But it does seem clear the continued focus on how bad Putin is to the exclusion of seeking a truce will cost even more lives.
Weren’t there reports of incinerator trailers months earlier in this battle zone?
The BBC funded NGO has managed to count 6000 casualties through the public records and other open sources.
Would you mind telling me how 90000 are even possible, let alone to hide it from public?
That reminds me the 1980s propaganda of hundreds of thousands Soviet deaths in Afghanistan and Stinger shot down the entire helicopter fleet. Which latter turned to be 19 downed helicopters to MANPADs of all types.
same old losses report for 3 months and I thought they were supposed to surrender by now.
No way. The Daily Mail said it was 987,000.
Try to keep up.
I'm not sure about the fewer part. We'll see.
Others are straining the leash, so to speak.
Cry "Havoc" and let slip the dogs of war.
No, this can’t be true. Russia is stronk and only lost 6 people, and that is only because they accidentally drove in the wrong direction and conquered Moldova instead of Ukraine.
Well, the problem is corruption in the Russian military is systemic. It’s built into the design. So you can kill 99% of the army, replace them, and the corruption will pick up right where the dead guys left off.
Probably because when the Ukrainians report their casualty numbers they are not so ridiculously out of line with the expected reality as the numbers that Russia tends to report.
I thought it was 1 trillion losses..
“Wildly” is the operative word here.
“I don’t know if this is true.”
Well, seeing as Ukraine was rejected for NATO membership quite a while before the war started, it shouldn’t be too hard to figure out the truth of that claim...
