I see the opposite. Many Ukrainians serve as volunteers still.
My best understanding:
Until round year 2015 or so, Ukraine had a military only in a very theoretical sense. And while they were keeping the Russians, who had been expecting a very quick march into Ukraine, at check, Ukraine successfully founded a de facto functional army.
Although theoretically Ukraine had just gotten their pre-existing army up and running. But, realistically Ukraine had to build their military from scratch.
Since around the year 2016 or so, the Ukrainian army has been in the position to handle a reasonable amount of the fighting on its eastern front. Around 2019 and 2020, the Ukrainian army has at last been really in control of the Ukrainian territory.
So theoretically, Ukraine had an army since it became independent in 1991. Now, its current army was de facto created between 2014 and 2019. Less than two years ago, Ukraine’s army now is at last fully functional.

According to the Telegraph, went on to become a “pro-Russian commentator on world affairs for Russian TV news outlets and websites.”
Also, the Duran’s director is Peter Lavelle, host of RT’s (Russian state news outlet) political debate program CrossTalk.
In 2018, the right-leaning Weekly Standard accused The Duran of peddling Russian “Fake News.”
The Duran is considered a questionable source based on far-right-wing bias, promotion of Russian propaganda, right-wing conspiracies, a lack of transparency, use of poor sources, plagiarism, and failed fact checks.
