In January 1982, President Ronald Reagan approved a CIA plan to sabotage the economy of the Soviet Union through covert transfers of technology that contained hidden malfunctions, including software that later triggered a huge explosion in a Siberian natural gas pipeline, according to a memoir by a Reagan White House official.
Thomas C. Reed, a former Air Force secretary who was serving in the National Security Council at the time, describes the episode in “At the Abyss: An Insider’s History of the Cold War,” published by Ballantine Books. Reed writes that the pipeline explosion was just one example of “cold-eyed economic warfare” against the Soviet Union that the CIA carried out under Director William J. Casey during the final years of the Cold War.
At the time, the United States was attempting to block Western Europe from importing Soviet natural gas. There were also signs that the Soviets were trying to steal a wide variety of Western technology.
“In order to disrupt the Soviet gas supply, its hard currency earnings from the West, and the internal Russian economy, the pipeline software that was to run the pumps, turbines, and valves was programmed to go haywire, after a decent interval, to reset pump speeds and valve settings to produce pressures far beyond those acceptable to pipeline joints and welds,” Reed writes.
“The result was the most monumental non-nuclear explosion and fire ever seen from space,”

This is just right. We are a democracy and what the US does is morally justified. Putin is a thug.
There was pipeline software in USSR in 1982? Can someone confirm that?
The Russian Federation attacked the Kiev region with kamikaze drones: there is a fire in the White Church, there is a victim
Admin by Admin October 5, 2022
Tonight, Russia attacked the Kyiv region with kamikaze drones. In Bila Tserkva, air defense went off, despite this, there are “arrivals” in the city.
This was announced by the head of the Kyiv OVA Oleksiy Kuleba.
“We have information about several explosions in Bila Tserkva. According to preliminary data, the city was attacked by kamikaze drones. Because of this, fires at infrastructure facilities. There is one victim,” he said.
Emergency services are already on the scene. Information about the destruction and victims, according to Kuleba, is still being clarified.
“Do not neglect the alarm signal – immediately go to the shelter. Take care of yourself and your loved ones. The air raid continues!”, he stressed.

3 hours ago — Ukrainian intelligence said that six Russian Tu-22M3 strike bombers took off from Shaykovka ... Large strike on residential neighborhood in Bila Tserkva.
Good article I do remember that story.
Reagan thoroughly taught the Russians not to mess with America.
Unfortunately 30 years of time and a wimp in the White House is forcing us to reeducate them.
The Americans booby trapped the stolen tech.
Perhaps were are doing the same with the Chinese stolen tech, but I doubt it.
National Review did a piece on this event, many moons ago when Bill Buckley ran it.
Obviously this is a residential area that houses VIPs. Russia attacked it in March. If Ukraine Intelligence is right this time they used strike bombers.

You do understand the connection that this CIA orchestrated sabotage event indicates right?
If the US can orchestrate a CIA sabotage of a Soviet pipeline in the early 1980s, given advancements, etc. of today, the US can likewise orchestrate and did orchestrate the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines....
I’ve heard about this - it was a Master’s course in not stealing our technology. Unfortunately we now have a Congress full of thieves selling us out, and a half-wit pretending to be president. That would make Harris a quarter-wit.
You do understand the Soviets stole the technology and built the system with errors embedded - right? They deserved what they got.
500 on 2 Trains Reported Killed By Soviet Gas Pipeline Explosion
Here is probably what happened. There is a thread on this.
Back in the 1980s the Soviets acquired “dual-use” computers and the CIA had them modified before shipment. It was the same kind of thing that China has done to all the motherboards they have sold us.
I believe you’re right on the money!
There’s a moral difference between letting the Soviets steal technology that has been booby trapped and just plain old bombing a pipeline with explosives.
And this installed administration has zero morals.
You do realize that the US committed an act of international sabotage, rightly an act of international terrorism, in the early 1980s on Soviet soil, and the US most likely committed ANOTHER act of international sabotage and act of international terrorism on another Russian-German owned/controlled set of pipelines?
And be warned playing games of tit-for-tat, this world can go up in a sh*tload of mushroom clouds....you know, by playing tit0for-tat and “they got what they deserved” BS.......
“ I had not heard of this before. I wonder if it’s happened again to the Nord Stream pipeline? ”
Nope. Take a few moments to educate yourself.
The report could be bogus.
My recollection includes Reagan meeting with the Saudis to increase oil production and thus depress the price of crude. That action in itself helped speed the Orc economy into ruin.
Simpler. More elegant. The Gipper was a genius.
Ops, look what I just ran across:
