‘Coco Chow’ and the Spirit of Now
National Review ^ | October 2, 2022 | Jay Nordlinger

Posted on 10/03/2022 3:53:17 AM PDT by karpov

“He has a DEATH WISH,” wrote Donald Trump, on Truth Social, his version of Twitter. “Must immediately seek help and advise from his China loving wife, Coco Chow!”

The “he” is Senator Mitch McConnell. The “China loving wife, Coco Chow!” is Elaine Chao, McConnell’s wife, who was the transportation secretary in the Trump administration.

This is the kind of thing that most Republicans chuckle at, in my experience — Republicans in politics and in the media. “Well, that’s the way he talks,” they say. “He may not be as polished as a Buckley or as genial as a Reagan, but he believes the same things, and he fights, and” blah blah blah.

Someone ought to pull a Joseph N. Welch on Trump — some top GOP-er, in politics or the media. “Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?” Who will do it? McConnell? Some cable host? One of the big podcasters?

I guess Lindsey Graham is out.

Liz Cheney has done it, of course — and the GOP is done with her (and I think she with it). There would be a cost to saying no to Trump’s nastiness, even at this late date. But when is there not a cost to courage? Otherwise it would not be courage.

I myself am an appreciator of sharp elbows. Mine are pretty sharp themselves. But what Trump manifests — and has always manifested — is something else. Peggy Noonan wrote a book about Ronald Reagan called “When Character Was King.” Character was cast out of the kingdom some years ago. But maybe it can come back?

Lately, I have been noting the comebacks of “America First” and “Christian nationalism.” If those things can come back — maybe other things can as well.

I think some Freepers don't recognize how many Americans are repulsed by Trump's personality, including his racism, and will not vote for him for that reason. I will abstain if he is the nominee but would vote for DeSantis, Youngkin, Haley, Cruz etc.

Hey!

We’re at war with violent leftwing communists/marxists/NAZI socialists.

We NEED a wartime President who will fight for America...and NOT a wimpy country club republican.

Since you included known RINOs (Haley, Cruz etc.), you outed yourself as a RINO and anti-Trumper rejecting his pro-America, America First agenda.

I think the RINO Establishment which most definitely includes NR do not realize how disgusted most Right leaning voters are with them and how much we simply do not care about the constant stream of BS they spew.

They’re just assistant Democrats. They lie on the campaign trail every few years and when in office do absolutely nothing they promised they would do while campaigning for our votes. They don’t actually believe a word they say. They hold most middle and working class patriotic Americans in utter contempt every bit as much as their Democrat buddies. They just hide it better.

But the vast majority of us know who and what they are. That’s why we have no use for them.

That's just perfect. Welch said that in defense of a communist on his staff, who was being outed by Sen. Joseph McCarthy who was correctly identifying communist infiltration as a big problem. If we had listened to McCarthy and not to Welch, this country would be better off.

I understand that some people find Trump a little abrasive. I don't care. Trump is correct. That matters.

There is a lot of irony in the fact that National Review, founded by a supporter of Senator Joseph McCarthy, now cures the rebuke of Senator Ralph Flanders, a RINO of his day, to McCarthy in the attack on Trump.

You’re an establishment Republican. That’s fair.

But Donald Trump was elected in 2016 because tens of millions of Republicans were sick of being led around by corrupt, feckless politicians who made careers out of selling American citizens out to major corporations and foreign interests.

Every one of those losers you listed falls into that same category. And, yes — that includes Ron DeSantis, too.

You will abstain if he is the nominee because he offends your sensibilities? Because the Left tells you he’s a racist?

You ever think of using your brain to think for yourself?

What a Leftist pussy you are. What are you doing on this website?

I don’t mind what he said about the communist wife of Mitch but I do mind that Trump picked her to serve in his cabinet. Once again, another bad hire. How can we know that if he is president again he won’t spend 4 more years of one bad hire after another. We don’t have time for that.

People who are repulsed by Trump are displaying confirmation bias*.

They want to dislike Trump for a variety of reasons and are looking for excuses to support their dislike. Their dislike of Trump may be due to his popularity (something they just don't understand), his Queen's bluntness (which is a weird kind of inarticulateness), his confidence, because their job requires them to hate Trump (any writer for the NRO or MSM), or maybe even because their wives hate Trump and they're afraid to differ with their wives (that's my own brother's excuse but he won't admit it).

Once they have decided they don't like Trump, they see news and information all over the place that confirms that bias.

*Confirmation bias is the tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms or supports one's prior beliefs or values.

You’ve hit on Trump’s biggest failure- hiring the wrong people. People who actively sabotaged his stated agenda.like Kushner and those who stab led him in the back like Stephanie Grisham.

You are looking at the personification of a Massachusetts Republican there.

I wonder if “karpov” is Mitt Romney’s screen name on FR.

Another bad hire, huh? Well, Washington is full of bad hires supposedly hired by the voters and that means YOU. I don’t really blame the voters. I believe that our entire political system is corrupt from the election process on through.

Anyone who thinks the President has free reign to appoint his own cabinet members needs a lesson in U.S. civics.
