Germany's municipalities are getting serious and preparing for the concrete consequences of a widespread power blackout. The Hessian Rheingau-Taunus district is the first of 401 German districts and urban districts to have a specialist company in Berlin examine and simulate what threatens in the event of a blackout in order to be prepared for the increasingly likely eventuality.
According to this, 400 deaths could be expected within 96 hours. After 24 hours, livestock would die, substations would fail, and water tanks would run dry. Then there would be looting, fires and economic damage in the hundreds of millions. Unlike Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck, district fire inspector Christian Rossel currently considers the risk of a blackout to be much more likely than a lack of gas, which would not have such dramatic consequences, even if one were not preparing for it.

This seems somewhat alarmist. It will be bad but it’s not like a magnitude 8 earthquake. Depending on the weather many people could end up dying due to exposure to cold.

If there’s a particularly cold winter and those 650,000+ electric space heaters are all plugged in for extended periods, the blackouts may be much longer, people may freeze to death.
That sounds over dramatic to me. Places have power outages for various reasons all the time.

I had some low-end renters moving in while I was still working on the place. Their very hot looking daughter was moving in boxes dressed in flip flops a braless halter and hot pants. It was 24 degrees Fahrenheit. With the door constantly open for traffic she turned on the central heat to max. I said, “When you start paying the bills on Monday you can make it as high as you want. But since it’s still in my name so turn it off. You might try putting on some clothes.”
She dramatically rolled her eyes and said, “Whatever.” No matter the temperature, I never saw her dressed in any other style of outfit. She’d just run shivering to the car and crank up the heat. Some people are idiots. Those are the ones who will freeze to death.
Not to mention the many Germans that would be stuck on escalators, with no hope of rescue.
If their horrid $hots aren’t ‘effective’ enough, the manufactured energy crisis will be.
