Read the story. 6 years. Was friendly. Wouldn’t hurt anyone. We hear the same thing over and over yet, somehow, it’s the owners fault because they weren’t trained properly.

Where in the story does it say the dog was a fighting dog because I must have missed it. What is with people defending dogs that can tear you apart?

“Family does not want the dog euthanized.” Crazy. That would be the first thing I would want done and I would be willing to kill it myself if it had killed one of my family.

That said, when properly trained, they are wonderful dogs.

Until they aren't

Dogs are social, pack animals. They need to be sure of their place in the pack.

Pack animals who are unsure of their place, if, for example, the human acts subservient to the dog, sometimes have the dog attack as a way of asserting its dominance.

So, a young dog may naturally feel subservient, but upon reaching maturity, may attempt to assert its dominance with an attack.

In breeds bred for aggression and fighting, once an attack starts, it may be difficult to stop.

Pit Bulls are like hand grenades. They can sit on your shelf for years, cool story, cool look, etc until one day, they blow up and cause death and destruction.

The family is insane and won’t have a say in the matter.

The dog will be euthanized if it hasn’t already been done.

Pit bulls are misunderstood. They only attack if you twitch a special face muscle. We love our pit bull. It was our baby’s fault for crying…and other redneck excuses

It’s true they don’t have to have been fought. It’s in their genes. These dogs were specifically bred for the fight ring. Fight dogs gonna fight, same as herd dogs gonna herd. My Spaniel mix has never been on a duck hunting outing, but she instinctively points ducks. (It’s kind of funny, as she seems confused herself as to why she is doing so, and looks up at me as if to say “why am I doing this?)

Herding and pointing are harmless. Dogs bred to tenaciously fight to the death are not harmless. You never know when that instinct will kick in. Like the people who identically keep pet lions, claiming they are big pussycats, until one day that likely instinct kicks in and they become lion food.

There was a little outbreak of Pit Bull maulings (some ending in death) in my hometown area some years ago. It turned out the dogs responsible were all descended from the same breeding pair. The great majority of dogs in our local shelters are Pit Bulls or Pit Bull mixes, yet people keep keep breeding them and buying and selling them.

IMHO, it’s cruel to continue breeding them. They kill other pets at an alarming rate. The maim and kill people. They end up in shelter cages or euthanized for doing what they were bred to do. It’s an endless cycle that needs to be stopped.

I’m glad it chomped up the owner and not a neighborhood child out riding their bicycle.

Pitbull owners are evil degenerates willing to needlessly put your children’s lives at risk all so they can power trip keeping a wild, dangerous animal as a ‘pet’.

Whatever loser picked out this pit bull for an elderly woman should be put down with the dog.

You are bringing up a good point. If the grandmother was suffering from dementia, she may have easily done something odd that triggered the dog. She may have yelled at it, slapped it or just moved oddly.

Earlier this year:

Mother-of-three who was scalped, had her arms ripped off and colon torn out in savage pit bull and German Shepherd attack may also lose her leg - but is finally discharged from hospital after seven weeks of surgeries

*Kaylee Waltman, 38, sustained life-threatening injuries when she was attacked by three dogs on the walk back from her boyfriend's house on March 21
*The dogs - two pit bulls and one German shepherd - bit her so hard they tore through the skin on her head, tore off her eyelid and chewed through her colon
*After seven weeks in the hospital, Waltman was able to return home on Tuesday
*She still faces several outpatient surgeries and risks losing her leg
*Waltman's arms were amputated following the attack and she had to get a colostomy due to the injuries to her colon
The dogs' owner, Justin Minor, 36, faces multiple charges for the attack

I will NEVER own a “rescue” pit bull. A dog who has been fought will always have a VERY STRONG prey drive.

When one of these "rescued" dogs go awry and injure or kill someone, the rescue organizations should be held responsible as well. Those organizations bear responsibility in putting these dogs in a position to cause injuries.

Well, he’s got some of Grandma in him.
