The UK’s Channel 4 News is reporting that British authorities have installed roughly “one million cameras in every aspect of British life” made by a Chinese company called “Hikvision.” They have been posted in schools, top-secret laboratories, and police buildings. And it’s not just the Brits who are using them. “They [Hikvision] are the biggest providers of surveillance technology on earth,” reported Channel 4 News.
The video says that no one knows just how many Hikvision cameras are posted worldwide—that’s about to become very important—though they are believed to own one-third of the market share and produce 36 million cameras per year.

I have 20 cameras in my surveillance system. I would say half are by Hikvision and the remainder are by Dahua. They are hooked up to NVRs and then to my Lan and then to my desk top computer. I do not see how Hikvision can gain access to them. If they could all they would see is the streets around my house and my backyard.
Back in 2008 and 2009, tens of thousands of government-owned hard drives were replaced when it was discovered that a Chinese-made controller chip within them was trying to contact two .cn web domains.

The surveillance cameras at my last house were made by a Chinese company named Zosi. About 6 months after installing them the login password was changed by someone other than myself. I tried numerous times to reset the password, but the company was of no help. I then checked the logs on my router to find that my DVR and cameras were being accessed from China. I tossed the DVR and installed a system made in Canada at my new house.
The Chinese are getting better and better at concealing this.
There are non-Chinese manufactured cameras using Chinese circuit boards that allow access.
Not sure where you can go and not be watched anymore. I have four cameras by Sanance and can’t keep anything running or access it reliably so I shut them off. I’m only guessing they can’t access them if they are unplugged...no I’m not really paranoid.

If your computer is connected to the internet then they can access the material stored on it and through the software control your cameras.
Unless you have installed an outbound proxy server that blocks outbound connections unless approved by you ... then they can call home.
