According to me
Tjis has been a gold mine thread.
As I scrolled through the list I was amazed that I didn't see it until your post. I loved the movie so I read the book it was based on. The Good Shepherd by C.S. Forester. Never could figure out why Elisabeth Shue got high billing in the movie - her character was barely in the movie and I don't think in the book at all.
“The Lost Battalion” with Rick Schroeder is very good.
Missed Zulu.
...and The John Ford trilogy, Ft.Apache, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, Rio Grande. Add in Wee Willie Winkie. Admit it you had a tear in your eye when Shirley sNg to Victor McLaughlin.
The German film Stalingrad was very good. Pretty hard to make you feel sorry for Germans during WW2, but yeah, in that movie I did at times.
Greyhound is still restricted to Apple+. A lot of people don’t have access and, in fact, have probably not yet heard of it. I was aware of the film but only saw it by freeloading on my daughter’s one month trial subscription.
The way the streamers are now segmenting the distribution system, a lot of films will be out of sight, out of mind to a majority of potential viewers. Most of them will eventually become available on multiple platforms, perhaps free or perhaps for a cheap rental, but that may take a couple of years. The buzz will have moved on. The only people who will find them will be people who are actively looking for them.
The film industry hypes the big tentpoles, but the hidden gems slip by with little fanfare. They’re hiding in plain sight. As casual viewers, our target acquisition systems need upgrading. I keep a watchlist (Letterboxd has a great free app for that), and I’m willing to take a one month subscription to a streamer once I have three or four good films stacked up.
I got the 3-set on HD DVD some years ago. Probably avail at Amazon. It is one of my favorite movies.
Easily a cult classic.
Some of the classic lines, as she dies, “Oh Johnny I had you”
“LET’S NOT FORGET WWII NAVY DON RICKLES!”
You’re right, Rickles made his screen debut and that 👍movie.
I will check it out-thank you for the suggestion…:)
Was that before he became CPO Sharkey?
Run Silent, Run Deep was made in 1958. Rickles was just a kid back then.
CPO Sharkey was 1976
Oh you’re no fun anymore.
My son went on to serve in Marine Presidential Security Forces. The guys who interviewed him in Boot Camp said they started with 600 in his cohort, and he was one of four selected. His time of service was during 2003-2004.
He was among the best of the best.
Many years ago I was on vacation with my three sons in the FL panhandle and I glanced out of the corner of my eye what seemed to be an SR-71. I had to turn around, and sure enough, there was a Blackbird on public display in front of an aerospace museum. I have a pic of myself and my three sons standing underneath and touching the fuselage. :)
