1, Journalist protocol to prevent complaints from persons with similar names. 2, Long established tradition in a great many cultures.

That’s actually a short name for a South of the Border born person. I’ve met a couple with four names PLUS the hyphenated last name.
The reason for the hyphenated last name is to include the family name of both parents.
In this guy’s case Mom was a Pascual and Dad was a Reyes.
It’s done in Spain and Portugal as well.

In some hispanic cultures, the Mother’s maiden name is included hyphenated in the name of the child.
