Nah. The ticket itself tells you where to collect.

“Unless we hear a Rest of the Story from Ralph’s.”
Your response seems to intimate that this Freeper may be a liar. And, that Ralph’s may have a valid excuse for not honoring the man’s ticket.
Let’s say for argument’s sake the clerk was justifiably suspicious. That does not excuse the clerks refusal to allow the Freeper to speak with the store manager.
Unless you’re going to assert that this is also a lie by the poster?
Unless you, just postulate without evidence this story is complete BS, and nothing the man states is how it went down.

Apparently a lot of the smaller ‘convenient’ places pull that. Report it to your state lottery.

where I;m originally from, Vancouver Canada, according to the rules, the store HAS to HAVE at least $5000 in cash to pay out lotto winners.

The store runs out of cash, we get it. The store is supposed to give you a voucher if it’s more than $500 to the princial lottery and you bring it to their office and they’ll give you the money.

I’ve won $400 at some times and they know they have to give it ot me stateside. Never heard of your problem before.

The few times we’ve bought one, we’ve checked the lottery website online. I think the most I’ve ever won is $50, and had no problem getting paid; but we don’t play much.

If we did win a lot of money, we’d go to a lawyer first. It’s probably best to buy a ticket in a state where winners are allowed to remain anonymous, too.

We have won 2300.00 and 1,000,00 on scratch-offs. Went to lottery to claim. Anything over 500.00, go there.

Along with the money we got a free ‘Lottery Winner’ T-shirt (I would never wear)
and a orange canvas bag of some sort. Yeahhhhhhh

“it used to be $600”

Probably still is, because that’s the amount that triggers a 1099 being issued.

They should normally payout up to $599, looks like.

But there are exceptions.

The Lottery may exempt Retailers, on a case-by-case basis, from the general requirement that they pay all prizes of $599 or less after Retailer provides the Lottery with written documentation showing that the Retailer’s corporate policy prohibits cashing larger prizes or the Retailer’s location is such that cashing larger prizes would create an unacceptable security risk. In the appropriate case, the Lottery may agree to establish a lower cashing limit and/or restricted cashing hours for a particular Retailer. When cashing hours are restricted, the hours set must be fair and reasonable and posted for customer convenience. Under no circumstance will Retailer be exempted from paying cash prizes less than $50.

Perhaps the store manager’s spouse just died. Perhaps the manager is contemplating suicide.

For point of reference, I don’t believe that the FR poster has any likelyhood of posting a falsehood. I DO understand that some things unseen happen to our inconvenience. Which is all that the FReeper endured. Inconvenience. Not theft, not assault, not arrest. Inconvenience. And yes, there could be employee’s incompetence.

Once i had occasion to be at a gas pump, sitting in my truck, and a young irate woman beat on my driver side window, yelling at me to move. When she finally shut up for two seconds, I apologized and stated truthfully that i was on the phone and just heard that a dear friend had died unexpectedly, within the hour. “Oh,”, she said, “sorry “, she said, “I’m in a hurry” , she said.

We don’t know the rest of the story. We could all be like my impatient liberal wife and
say “that’s not helping me”.

If it came from the machine, it might be they don’t cash tickets there. I don’t recall Ralphs having anywhere to cash tickets when I was in California but it’s been about ten years. What time of day did you attempt to cash the ticket?

You were inconvenienced and acted like a Karen/Ken to a clerk who doesn’t care whether you won or not and doesn’t care what you won. The clerk wants customers to go away and isn’t looking for trouble. If a clerk tells you there isn’t someone to trained/authorized to help them or there isn’t enough money, demanding a manager isn’t going to do anything except cause stress for the retail clerk. These managers often don’t control cash access and cannot loan money. They can’t help you.

Is this Ralphs in Long Beach? Near California State University, Long Beach? Area near CSULB is OK...

There is a difference between North Long Beach and East Long Beach...East Long Beach is near Orange County...North Long Beach is near Compton...

No at the QT and Circle K in my town just outside Phoenix they can’t give me more than $100 at a time. The QT also doesn’t pay out winnings between midnight and 6 am. Bizarre!
