My Dutch Uncle taught me to ‘pretend’ to pick up a stone when being harassed by a pack of dogs. Curs have a history of having things thrown at them and know when a zinger is coming. It works!

I’ll have to work on the “dead eye” stare specifically. I find that very intense direct eye contact tends to fluster a lot of people - I’d say the majority. They’ll look away, walk away, don’t want to engage any more or at all.

I found that being 5’2 and in shape attracts a lot of nonsense, when I was young.

Dead eye stare would just get “Why so down? Smile!”

Going absolutely ape helped.

A deep, dropped two octaves, gutteral, rage-filled, ugly demonic voice helped.

This is real YMMV advice.

this is going to sound a bit weak, but here goes. Imagine you have a desert eagle under your jacket to the point where you almost believe it. It simply changes how your walk, give eye contact, etc. You sort of naturally go into the “lowered chin, blank eyes” mode, when you’re observing a potential threat.

It’s really true. It really does give people a “I probably should just walk on by” feeling. Fact is, most muggers are cowards (kinda like most police and even sharks). That is, they can pack a punch, but are scared of any target that might bring them harm. They all want to lopsided encounter, with them firmly on top.

Thanks for the tip. I try to use situational awareness when I’m out and about. I hate going shopping for anything but necessities. I avoid crowds if I can, and always have my spidey senses up if I go into bigger cities, though I know anything can happen even in small towns. The semi-rural life has really grown on me, and thankfully, my husband, too. There’s not a lot of desire for us to leave our little slice of heaven, other than a grocery run.
