Colorado isn’t viewed as a prime Republican Senate pickup opportunity this fall — not yet at least.
In the hopes of keeping it that way, Democrats are aggressively advancing the campaign of a hardline MAGA Senate candidate in a last-ditch effort to elevate him over a moderate Republican who is viewed as a more serious threat to Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet.
National and statewide GOP operatives were frantically trading texts Tuesday night as ad buys posted from Democratic Colorado, a left-wing super PAC that is spending at least $800,000 this week alone to meddle in the Republican primary.
The group is currently running an ad burnishing state Rep. Ron Hanks’ conservative credentials — a spot that GOP strategists say will undoubtedly boost his underfunded effort in the June 28 Republican primary.
Hanks, who believes former President Donald Trump won in 2020 and that all abortions should be outlawed, has raised just $38,000 throughout the course of his Senate campaign and has never placed a TV ad of his own. He is up against Joe O’Dea, whom many in the GOP think could have a shot at winning over crucial unaffiliated and disaffected Democratic voters in November.
While Democrats have dominated statewide races in recent years — President Joe Biden won Colorado by double digits in 2020 — the president’s approval ratings are currently underwater in the blue state.
“Beating Hanks in the general election is a layup,” said Greg Brophy, a GOP strategist and former Colorado state legislator who is supporting O’Dea. “If Democrats spend $1 million to help Hanks win the GOP primary, that will save them $20 million in the general. It’s actually brilliant.”

Until it backfires on them....
another suggestion....Republicans need to institute closed primaries
That’s fine but close primaries won’t stop them spending on ads prior to elections.
In this particular case, I’m not opposed to the Operation Chaos they’re running because, after all, who wants to vote for a RINO anyways? I say, let them help the conservative!
I agree with both of you.
Now does Colorado have closed primaries?
This very well may bite the Democrats.
People want someone who is strong.
Hey! No fair! Then how would The Uniparty block conservatives from holding office?
Anything that damages RINOs is welcome.
Latest poll has Joe O’Dea at 38% and Hanks at 14%. Let them waste their money trying to get another Todd Akin-style nominee, this primary isn’t particular competitive.
In places like Colorado have the Republicans actually ever tried to run a candidate who was adamantly opposed to legal abortion?
Is there any evidence that position alone means defeat?
Or is brainwashing in effect?
With the destruction the Dems are wreaking on the economy, the Republican is very likely to win regardless of anything else. Go MAGA candidate!
The Dems did the same in the PA primary by helping to get Doug Mastriano nominated.
“President Joe Biden won Colorado by double digits in 2020”
California and New York carpetbaggers.
“Now does Colorado have closed primaries?”
Yes.
All mail in ballot state is worse than open primaries.
>another suggestion....Republicans need to institute closed primaries<
I have never understood why they chose that route.
How many candidates? I’m assuming from your comment that 14% is second place, with the remaining 48% scattered between at least five different candidates plus undecided.
I am a registered independent in Commierado for work related reasons. I was never offended about not being able to vote in primaries. That is (now was) part of the deal. However too many wussy independents got their knickers in a twist over this so now independents get a Dim and a Republican ballot in the mail but can only vote with one if them (winky wink). That means Dim leaning independents can pick the worst Republican candidate.
This state is toast and, if we were not over 70, we would move to a free state.
Thanks. Info from boots on the ground is good.
