There is a great deal we can do to stop the horrors of mass killings from happening. Gun control is the least effective tool in our arsenal. If not a gun, easily obtained illegally, then a knife, bow and arrows, club, automobile, bomb, electrocution, poison, rock, suffocation, alchohol, and on and on and on. The means to commit murder are limitless. Controlling the urge to kill is the issue.
Liberals who want to control guns as a means of stopping murder are simply too shallow minded to be able to think about the problem rationally. Controlling guns does not control murder. Literally anything can be a weapon in the hands of a determined homicidal young man. And, yes, the great preponderance of these killers are young men of all races.
We can start by asking the simple question, "What drives a young man to kill?" That would be an excellent place to start. What motivates killing? Has anyone seriously bothered to ask that question? What are the common factors?
We know prescribed psychotropics are a common denominator. Every killer has been on these SSRI drugs ( Selective Serotonin Re-Uptake Inhibitors ). Zoloft, Luvox, Prozac, Paxil, Ritalin, Effexor, Celexa, Welbutrin, the list goes on. All of these are known to cause suicide and violence. Clearly the numbers are tiny, much as the negative side effects from any drug therapy. Just as clearly these inhibitors are a miracle therapy for the great majority of users.
Ignoring or suppressing the negative effect of SSRIs on certain patients, however, is calloused and irresponsible. Such refusal to carefully monitor psychotropic reactions is unethical at the very least.
We must look at the effects of certain current cultural themes on young men. It is not pretty. The insistence on denying the legitimacy of male hormones in social settings is especially abhorrent. These attitudes have given rise to gross imbalances in our social intercourse. Female toxicity is rampant where male oppression is practiced.
The impact of online gaming is a significant factor in developing fantastical values, especially among young men. The popular game, RUST, is an especially egregious example of fostering antisocial attitudes. Murder and theft are the foundational principles of this hypnotic game.
There is a great deal we can do to rid ourselves of the violence that is increasing in our society. It requires a will to do so coupled with the intelligence to determine real causes rather than simply removing one or another tool of violence.
Gun control is the most ineffective thing we can possibly do to deal with this issue. Insisting upon that as the only or best answer merely perpetuates the situation. The problem is not guns. It is the desire to kill.
AMEN! These vultures thrill at the sight of innocent blood. It energizes them.

You have to ask the next question. How do most of these deranged killers come about?
You’ll find the answer in the rot that is our culture. A culture whose values have led to a huge number of broken families, with millions of kids living without a father figure. A culture that has become increasingly permissive and one that relieves many of personal responsibility. A society that has eliminated shame. Shaming used to be a way that society enforced certain standards of behavior. Today anything goes.
Little wonder we see these atrocities almost on a weekly basis.
We’ve become a very dysfunctional society and fixing it, even if there was a will to fix it (which I don’t see much of) is not going to be easy.

NOT TRUE. Capital punishment, also known as the death penalty, is a state-sanctioned practice of killing a person as a punishment for a crime. Someone who has not committed a crime worthy of capital punishment but who has been determined by a panel of psychiatrists to be both evil and batsh*t crazy, i.e. insane, should be confined in a mental health facility. Democrat politicians would vigorously oppose that practice since a great majority of them are so obviously psychotic themselves!
Public schools get the kids medicated as early as kindergarten...maybe pre-k by now.

In the 1990s while driving home from work I used to listen to the Michael Savage show. He would frequently raise hell about the very tragedy you’ve mentioned here. I think he had done some academic study pertaining to the problem.

We are talking about a guy that could have walked out of there alive if he surrendered but chose to fight to the death.

Probably not, but in my view way too many convicted murderers in this country who should have been executed were not. And more than a few are eventually released from prison and then commit additional assaults and murders. Ramos was known to be a violent threat, should have been evaluated by psychiatrists, and should have been placed in an institution for the criminally insane.
I have a problem with “known.”
F’instance almost everybody on Free Republic qualifies as a “known” right-wing extremist, at least by the standards of the current regime. Obviously, as right-wing extremists, we’re all potential violent threats as well.
I would like the police to wait until an actual crime is committed before they actually run someone in. Likewise before placing someone in the looney bin, with other violent loonies.
And MAKING someone see a shrink? Again, no. Not until they have forfeited their liberties.
