The Michigan Bureau of Elections has ruled that five GOP candidates running to unseat Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer are not eligible for the state's August primary because of faulty signatures on their campaign petitions.
The agency says the petitions in question include signatures from people paid to sign their names and the names of the deceased — a finding at least one campaign disputes.
Released Monday night, the bureau's report alleged that 18 petition circulators hired by GOP frontrunner James Craig, Detroit's former police chief, submitted 10,000 invalid signatures.
Businessman Perry Johnson also fell below the minimum verified signature threshold of 15,000 after the bureau identified about 9,400 invalid signatures.
"We strongly believe they are refusing to count thousands of signatures from legitimate voters who signed the petitions and look forward to winning this fight before the board and, if necessary, in the courts," said John Yob, a consultant for the Johnson campaign.
Three other GOP candidates for the state's top job were also found to have insufficient signatures, including financial adviser Michael Market, Michigan State Police Capt. Michael Brown and entrepreneur Donna Brandenburg.
On Thursday, the state Board of Canvassers (comprised of two Democrats and two Republicans) will meet and decide whether the candidates will be able to appear on the ballot. If the bureau's review holds, five of the 10 GOP candidates will be out of the race.
Michigan political consultant John Sellek says the findings are great news for other GOP primary candidates.

An almost incredible coincidence.
If you’re incapable of following instructions you’re too dumb to be Governor, no matter how bad Whitmer is.
has Trump endorsed anyone?
Wow, on petitions that hardly matter, the Michigan Election Police are checking every signature.
On mail-in ballots, well that is not so important.
If you actually believe the democrat MI board of elections on this, ...
James Craig had been leaning Whitmer in some polls. This is bad news.
Should always go for double the amount of signatures required.
If in fact the allegations are true
Remember - Michigan didn't care about verifying the signatures of ACTUAL voters when it came to getting rid of Trump.
So there's no possibility that their volunteers that went out on foot to get the required signatures were Whitmer plants who purposely spoiled the signatures? If one signature is deemed a fraud, then the entire page is tossed out.
I've seen the photos of the signature pages that are obviously the canvasser writing in 4 or more names and signatures with the same handwriting.
‘coincidence’ or plain stupidity?
We don’t want the stupids in our party anyway.
Noticed that too?
Don’t blame malice for an act of incompetence.
You’re assuming. I find it quote questionable when the GOP frontrunner James Craig is one of those eliminated.
This sounds like a Democrat attempt to “turn the tables” on the GOP and accuse it of the very types of voter fraud they engage in routinely (dead “voters,” ballot box stuffing, rigged petitions, etc.).
Bring on the next Rashida Talibe, at some point we'll be outraged.
No seed Whitmere. I’ll never forget how she wouldn’t let people buy seeds during Covid. She was one of the worst little Nazi’s out there. If the R’s don’t have sense enough to remind voters of this on a daily basis, then I guess they don’t have enough sense to be governor.
What happened is that several crooks have themselves hired as signature collectors. They delivered huge stacks of worthless signatures. Since the candidates thought they have enough, they stopped collecting.
This should be prosecuted as a fraud.
What to do with the candidates is a question.
They have obviously fallen victims to a fraud scheme.
But, they should be careful whom they are hiring.
I am glad I do not need to decide.
