Texas Power Grid Warns Of Record Demand Amid Back-To-Back Triple-Digit Heatwaves

An early summer heatwave pattern continues to boil parts of the Central and Southern Plains. This means parts of Texas will continue to roast with temperatures forecasted to reach triple digits next week.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the state’s power grid operator, is already warning of record energy demand next week as customers crank up the AC.

Power consultant Doug Lewin, who actively monitors the Texas grid, told FOX 4 News Dallas-Fort Worth that triple-digit temperatures are very concerning because it’s “still not even summer.”

On Tuesday, ERCOT reported power grid demand jumped to 70,703 megawatts, smashing the May 2018 record demand of 67,271 megawatts due to an early week heatwave. Now the next round of heat has the power grid operator concerned.

ERCOT issued an operating conditions notice (OCN) for extremely hot weather. The OCN begins on Friday and lasts through next Wednesday. The grid operator ensured customers it had enough power to meet the demand spike.

The National Weather Service’s Austin/San Antonio office warns that “more triple-digit heat is in store for early next week.”

High temperatures across the Dallas/Fort Worth areas are expected to flirt with triple digits on Sunday through next week.

Back-to-back heatwaves hitting parts of Texas when power plants usually go offline for maintenance is concerning, though the latest from ERCOT is that they have everything under control.

Beto is chomping at the bit for this to happen. As if he would do *anything* to improve the situation as Governor.

More solar panels (from China) and wind power. That's the ticket to rolling blackouts and high energy costs.

Tell the EPA to go eff themselves and reopen the coal plants that the Obama administration made us shutter.

What? You mean those solar panels and wind generators can’t carry the load? Wait until Biden gets his silly electric-cars-only bill passed and everyone plugs in when they get home from work.

I was thinking today, why would the democrats go so radical when they know it will kill them in the midterms, and to me the answer is because they know they will not lose. Absolutely nothing has been done about election integrity.

Sure glad I live in the small part of Texas that is not part of ERCOT. Much more of our power comes from reliable and environmentally friendly coal rather than the unreliable and environmentally damaging wind and solar favored by ERCOT.

Two of those coal plants are scheduled to be shut down, the one near Marshall and the other near Tatum

Whatever they’re thinking, they’re doing their best to ruin our country. They don’t seem to realize they’re in the same boat and are going to eventually feel the pain.

Is this the same clowns that froze us to death last February? People are going to get down and dirty.....don’t fool with Texans especially in our Spring and Summer. We’re lucky to have a generator but I worry about those who don’t like those with small children and the elderly and those on lifesaving oxygen like my Hub 4 years ago. That’s why we had to get the generator. That p!%%es me off!!

As of the end of 2021, ERCOT had in operation 56.9 GW of gas-fired generation capacity, 28.4 GW of wind capacity and 8.3 GW of solar capacity, according to the grid operator's monthly Capacity Changes by Fuel Type Charts.

In addition to the new capacity approved for commercial operation, ERCOT had 1.4 GW of renewables – wind, solar and battery storage -- with synchronization approved, meaning the capacity was connected to the grid and operating but not participating in power markets in January.

Also in January, ERCOT approved 183.2 MW of solar capacity for energization, meaning it could be connected to the grid and systems periodically energized for testing purposes.

In contrast, ERCOT in January added more than 810 MW of nameplate wind and solar capacity to the list of projects deemed inactive, because they failed to meet certain completion benchmarks.

Also, developers withdrew about 1.2 GW of solar and 14 MW of wind capacity additions from the generation interconnection process.

Bingo! Deport illegals and save the power grid and everything else.

Who knew it gets hot in the summer?? It was 115 degrees in the summer of 1980. I’d come home from work and sit in front of the open fridge with nothing on but a wet towel. Thanks to my grandpa for bringing over a little window unit.

It was just as hot in 2011 when TX had the drought and towns were hiring water witchers. We’re not to that level, yet. Deport illegals to save water, raised taxes to build them schools an low income housing and wear and tear on our roads and filling up the ERs and taking up US college slots and taking US babies’ formula, and...........

The problem can be easily fixed by forcing people to buy electric cars. /s

“Wait until Biden gets his silly electric-cars-only bill passed and everyone plugs in when they get home from work.”

That is something I have posted about before. This is just a May heatwave, and they are already ‘concerned”? Wait until July and August when it’s 102 and 90% humidity. Now imagine a time when most everyone in Houston, DFW, San Antonio and Austin gets home at 5:30 or 6 pm and plugs in the EV on a 102 degree day.
