It looks very dramatic in time-lapse.
In the 80s and 90s, did they call it a “haboob?”

Sandy loess soil, drought, lack of soil-holding vegetation, and wind have caused the dust to blow on the southern Great Plains since the prehistoric period. During the nineteenth century, drought and prairie fires sometimes destroyed the grass and exposed the soil to wind erosion. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the settlement of the region and drought contributed to dust storms
No they did not. Political Correct Crap. Dust Storm
Monsoon season was declared after three consecutive days of 55% humidity.
Usually July. Extreme heat and dry late June. Expect 115-120 every 3rd-4th week of June.
Moisture starts to roll from GOM in July. Pressure systems on a normal schedule. You are supposed to forget that.
I used to “chase” them.
Got pulled out of a wash by Union Pacific one year. :)
They normally roll off the RIM but sometimes would come out of the south, Rarely.
If a Mogollon storm is coming it will rage all the way from Payson to Ajo if the energy is there. Roofs blow off in the city and Scottsdale Rd flooded every time.
Raging water deep in the desert. Quite a sight to behold.
It was a dust storm blown by a massive severe thunderstorm.
It knocked out the power during dinner at the restaurant I was at, and blew down a freeway sign on I-29, and blew over a number of trees less than 2 miles from my house.
Suck it up, I’ve had to put up with the mediasupporation switching from tremor to temblor for earthquakes... :-)
Insurance claims came in about every year for automobile damage. Mainly people blasting down the highway instead of stopping. Worst case was an auto had the paint stripped down to the metal and the windshield etched to white.
I was in a sandstorm when I was a kid, probably late 1950s. I remember a huge wall of brown cloud bearing down on the OK ranch house. I had no clue what it was. My grandmother got me in the house just before it hit us and for the rest of the day. I already knew to take cover from a tornado. After that day, I also knew to take cover from dust storms.
We don’t have “haboobs” in the USA.
(In my best “Maxwell Smart” voice): “Oh no! Not Haboob! That’s terrible! The last thing we need is a Haboob! We’re not prepared for a Haboob! By the way, Chief.....What’s a Haboob?”
You have some great stories.
