Rare Haboob Rips Through Northern Plains
Zubu Brothers ^ | 5-13-2022

Parts of the Northern Plains experienced a rare weather phenomenon on Thursday evening called a “haboob.”

A haboob is a dust storm commonly seen in deserts, though one was spotted sweeping across parts of Iowa, South Dakota, and Minnesota.

While the Northern Plains doesn’t have deserts, there’s been plenty of dust following a megadrought that has consumed parts of the Central US.

The National Weather Service tweeted footage of a fast-moving haboob traversing Sioux Falls, South Dakota, transforming the day instantly into the night.

The haboob was also spotted in Little Rock, Iowa. A local news team was trapped in their vehicle with zero visibility as the dust rolled through.

The weather event on Thursday in parts of the Northern Plains is super rare and appears similar to dust storms during the ‘Dust Bowl’ era of the 1930s. Farmers in the region are battling either arid conditions or soggy fields, suggesting crop production could be underwhelming this growing season, adding to food inflation pressures for grains.

When that wind whipped through E. Arizona on Sunday, I witnessed the first dust storm I’ve seen here in 68 years. Sustained 37 mph and gusts in the 50s, two days in a row.

Haboob. No. Stop it, right now.

We’ve always called it a dust storm in plain English.

We don’t need Muslim words to describe what’s happening in North America.

Besides, it sounds too much like boob.

Haboobs happen in the middle east. In this country they are simply called dust storms.

“Why does everything seem like it’s turning into the 1930s!”

What if, human behaviors were cyclic. There is a season...

“Besides, it sounds too much like boob”

Are you against all meanings of “boob”?

“haboob.”

It was a dust storm. A Dust Storm. A DUST STORM.

Dusty Winds
Song by Marty Robbins

Dusty winds, hear them blow
Dusty winds, moanin’ low
Night and day on they go
Those dusty winds

I saw one of these while stationed at 29 Palms, CA in the early 1980s.

It swept west to east across the desert coming in from the Big Bear Lake area. Tumbleweeds were blowing across the desert floor in front of it. When it hit, everything turned dark for a while.

It was quite something. We spent the next few days cleaning all the dust up.

I wonder when Arizona is going to claim the West Half of New Mexico as it’s own because so much of Arizona has blown over there.

I remember the dust storms from Arizona blowing over Farmington and Aztec NM.
