V-E DAY: GERMANS SURRENDER, AMERICAN CELEBRATE, HARRY TRUMAN TURNS 61, and CANADIANS RIOT … ALL ON THE SAME DAY: On this day in 1945, the definitive German Instrument of Surrender was signed in Berlin. Americans celebrated. It also happened to be President Harry Truman’s birthday. And Canadian sailors … uh …. rioted and looted in Halifax, mobbing liquor stores and breaking windows in Halifax. Ha! Those darn Canadians. Who are they trying to kid when they look down their noses at Americans?

Interestingly enough, a Nazi German government of sorts continued to operate for a few weeks after VE Day. It was headed by Admiral Doenitz, Hitler’s chosen successor. The Allies shut it down on May 23, 1945.

Ha! Those darn Canadians. Who are they trying to kid when they look down their noses at Americans?

The Canadians deserved to celebrate because they were assigned some of the dirtiest jobs in the war such as the landing at Dieppe, where about 3,000 of them were taken prisoner. They were also assigned the futile task of defending Hong Kong, which was surrounded by Japanese-controlled territory.

Today is also the anniversary of Operation Linebacker in which President Nixon sent our warplanes to bomb Hanoi.

Without taking out SAM sites per instruction from GOD ONLY KNOWS. But somebody didn’t want to risk upsetting the Russians who were in all probability operating the SAM sites for the North Vietnamese communists.
