Fascism, Nazism and communism are all the same thing: tyranny. I think it might be time to start over with this country. And anyone who doesn’t want to live here can leave.

“at the dawn of the internet age people thought it would usher in the long-promised age of democratic tranquility and equality.”

I for one, do not remember any such sentiment. What I do remember is the deep concern people had for their privacy, even before they bought their first Windows PC.

If you could transport fascists from a century ago to this age, they would assume that fascism had carried the day in the great ideological wars of the 20th century. Everything in American life is now controlled by a partnership between capital and the state.
***“Fascism should more appropriately be called corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power.” ~Benito Mussolini

What it has done is enhanced the human penchant for tribalism, the desire to be with their own.

It’s done so by allowing easier access and communication with members of the tribe anywhere in the nation and even the world.

In a way, it has eliminated the barriers of geography.

From the essay:

"Even the dullest civic nationalist can plainly see that the people in charge have zero interest in letting the public decide much of anything."

So he has correctly pegged the "civnats" but his idea is to somehow move toward a more libertarian society, i.e. utopian fantasyland?

<>In 2016, one of the most famous people in the world beat one of the most hated people in the world and they said that was an existential threat to democracy, one that required rigging the next election to save democracy.<>

Sad.
