Why the Battle for Donbas will be very different: While the world nervously awaits the opening salvo of the Battle of Donbas, many in the West are optimistic. Others believe that the exceptional military performance demonstrated by the Ukraine Armed Forces (UAF) in repelling – and then driving out – Russian forces around Kyiv, will reprise their effort and again blunt Russia’s offensive in the Donbas and eventually outright win the war.

I don’t know about the Stingers, but the Javelins were old Block 0 models
Answer: all of it!
Conclusion
Only the people of Ukraine and their president can decide what the best course of action is for Ukraine. They can choose to try and continue the war and fight for eventual victory, but they will have to acknowledge they are taking a major risk that they could suffer a military defeat instead. Even an eventual victory would come at a profoundly high cost to the Ukrainian population and cities.
A negotiated settlement could end the fighting in the near term but come at the cost of the loss of some eastern territory. There are no easy choices here, and whatever Zelensky and the people of Ukraine decide, they are going to pay a heavy price; there’s just no way around that ugly fact.
What other proximate threat is there where the US would have a use for these missiles?
———-
You are a very short sighted thinker. Did anyone think a year ago there would be a Russo Ukraine war? No. Did anyone in 1990 know Gulf War 1 would start in 1991? Or Gulf war 2? If you haven’t noticed, China and its proxies, North Korea, Iran, Turkey, Israel are beating the war drums. Go back since the Korean War for a lesson in history. That said, there is no guarantees this current Ukie/ Vlad doesn’t expand to all of Europe.
The war cycle has just started, a Potato Head Joe administration has energized all nations wishing us ill. We are weak. What we do know now: 1) WW3 in the finance world has started 2) Reverse sanctions by Russia has weakened our aircraft and weapons industries 3) world supply chains are broken down 4) NATO is a paper tiger. Much much more….
Do be aware just prior to WW2, 1938, the US embargoed Japan, sanctioned them, just like we did to Russia. You will do well to brush up on modern history. There is nothing new under the Sun, Amen.
But nobody has a large tank (or CAS, much more so) fleet that the US needs to oppose. It would take far longer to build that sort of thing up (thousands of modern tanks) than to resupply the US ATGM stocks.
The Russians have, by far, the greatest collection of appropriate targets for Javelins on earth.
And even more so SU-25s and attack helicopters.
With modern weapons, attackers need speed and some element of OpSec to have success against a competent opponent, and the Russians don't seem to have either.
Prayer up for Ukraine. May God protect them and give them strength. And may he foil the plans of the Russians and drive them out of Ukraine’s land.
i believe, like the old Tories, there is a cultural difference that is not being mentioned much.
possibly there is something that was kept under the thumb of the old soviet ukraine, which since has come forward, as a tribal group has found that they too have the right to self determination, without Kiev!
The Russians have mined the flanks of their troop buildup in Donbass. This means they are not capable of maneuver operations at this time and are worried about encirclement. So much for May 9th. The Putin BDE will tell us it was May 9th 2023 all along, all according to plan....
We've given the Ukrainians false hope to drag this war out in order to hurt Russia. It's disgraceful.
a good balanced article , thanks. i doubt the rooskies will try to cut off the entire Uke donbass armies as that would create difficult supply lines.. go slow with ground and pound.
maybe 3 months to 1 year to take all donbass.
.
ONe source says the offensive has started with a new attack in the popasna city. This guy seems to have the best and most detailed donbass info among the youtube mappers which seem to come and go almost daily.

Maybe but Putin would have simply waited until 2024 when we elect a Democrat for President has Trump won in 2020.
I think its time to bring out some of Kazans oldies but goodies:

Kazan to marcusmaximus
This such a load of crap.
The Russians have a “cauldron” surrounding 60,000 Ukrainian troops and their neo-Nazi Azov battalion buddies in Eastern Ukraine. They have at least three more “cauldrons” formed in Ukraine. Cities are encircled. They have a stranglehold on Ukraine.”
BWHAHAHAHAHAHH!!!!
There will be a backlash against the Zelenski regime and its enablers when the war is over, much like there was in Germany after WW2.
I use the term “ right wing” in the Ukrainian sense, to avoid overusing the term “ nazi”
But the extreme right wing ultranationalist neo-nazi organizations….whatever term you want to use…are based on racial and ethnic superiority beliefs, historical vendettas and pogroms, and combined with good ol’ neo nazi rituals and traditions and legends of destiny …and hold their “ non Ukrainian” enemy in total contempt and as less than human. And about 30% of the population of Ukraine falls into the “ enemy” category.
And we wonder why they prefer to be separate Republics?
If they were muslims….we’d be defending them.
Kiev regime will NEVER reconcile with the 4 million inhabitants of Donbass.
The solution their guiding power sees is subjugation or extermination,
Openly discussed on Uke TV that 1.5 million people are superfluous and need to be eliminated.
In fact we have seen that Ukrainian life is very cheap to the Zelensky regime which proclaims Glory to Ukraine, Glory to the heroes ( Bandera slogan btw) … no capitulation. No negotiation.
As a pitch for more weapons.
Even now it is reported they are placing their artillery behind civilians for the coming Donbass battle,
So…what are we supporting?
That's crap. Prior to the invasion, virtually every western government and analyst predicted Ukraine would fall in just a few days. The clear message from that was that Ukraine should just cut the best deal it could with the Russians.
It was the Ukrainians themselves who rejected the defeatism of the rest of the West - including the U.S. -- and decided to fight tooth and nail despite our predictions of doom. It was only after the Ukrainian government refused to flee/surrender, and the Ukrainian military held firm on its own, that opinion elsewhere started to shift in favor of continued resistance.
You guys are just ticked that the Ukrainians didn't play according to the script Putin wrote. What's truly disgraceful - to use your word -- is how your ilk so eagerly wants to see the defeat of a people fighting so hard to preserve their own sovereignty.
yawn.
do you think Putin will DARE to use a nUKe on the Ukes?
.....
Who has the trump card here (no pun intended)?
I give Putin a bit of respect in this regard, as he seems to be showing restraint.
.....
The leaders of Russia have stated a believable argument that they face an EXISTENTIAL threat.
Please tell me what the ULTIMATE weapon is good for, if not for the ELIMINATION of existential threat/s.
Biden the fool has already given 1/4 of our Stingers and 1/3 of our Javelin to the Ukies. Some have been captured by Vlad ( Kadyrov) some destroyed, but the fact is our Pentagon called in the manufacturers- guess what? They said it will take at least two years to replenish our supply, three if they can’t get the needed materials ( Russian metal sanctions on the West)….and Vlad and Xi say “:Checkmate “.
The war cheerleaders just shot us in the foot, again.
********************************************************************
In addition to some of the donated Stingers/Javelins being destroyed or captured by the Russians one or more of each have been “diverted” by CORRUPT UKRAINIANS TO BE SOLD TO EAGER CHICOM AGENTS. The technology and intellectual property contained within those weapon systems will be rapidly exploited by the Chinese. DON’T DOUBT THIS!
No idea. Its a matter of definitions.
One can entertain some very silly definitions. Sometimes quite mad ones.
From my POV Russia never faced an “existential” threat from Ukraine, given that its done fairly well with an independent Ukraine since 1991. And nobody was going to even think of letting Ukraine into Nato till Russia became aggressive in 2014.
From my POV the Russian government is, one or the other, using this “existential” BS as a propaganda line, or it is quite mad.
