Finland was in a group of captive nations called the Russian empire a century ago. It threw off the Russian yoke, then cemented its independence imperfectly by killing 120K Russian invaders during the Winter War.

The Finns have decided, like NATO and other EU members, that any group they are part of, should be on a voluntary basis. Becoming a Russian oblast or being part of the Warsaw Pact, which specialized in invading the non-Russian members on Moscow’s behalf, is not one of the groups they want to be part of. If that chafes Russia’s hide, that’s not particularly surprising for an empire with a 1000-year record of territorial conquest.

They fought off Russia twice in the winter war and the continuation war.

The country wants yo join NATO to keep off the Russian eagle.
