The same thing happening here, just without any fanfare.

That’s nothing. I track our food costs. Last year the average was ~$620 a month, the first 3 months of this year we are averaging over $900. Considering most of the inflation was last year, this represents a drastic increase. And don’t get me started on our gas, utilities and insurance.

Given that Aldi sells mostly no-frills basic foods and house brands, a 20% price increase will be hard to ignore.

Them western countries sanctions against Russia are working out great for Russia aren’t they?
The western countries consumers are suffering even more than the Russians.
The Germans especially are not doing great. Just wait till Russia cuts off their natural gas supplies like they are threatening to.

High inflation, sure. Weimar hyperinflation, not close. I had some old German currency from the early ‘20s, several banknotes in the 100,000 Mark range and a million Mark banknote, and those weren’t even the largest denominations (and no, they aren’t still redeemable).

"This means we’re winning, right?"

The Bidenistas and the WEF goons have already told us that Ukrainian troops have enveloped Moscow.

Pasta and chicken are exactly as they were before Christmas. Gas is less than that.

Take that, Rooskies! And they’ll continue to punish the German people until the Russians start to behave themselves.

“A fortnight ago, Aldi raised the prices of about 160 items, and a week later 20 more items became more expensive. Other supermarket brands quickly followed suit.”

I’m planning a trip to Aldi (about 40 minutes away) in the near future to replenish some pantry/prepper supplies. I’ll report back if they’re raising prices at their store(s) in Wisconsin, too. Probably. Ugh!

BUT - it’s STILL the cheapest place around for groceries if you’re not picky about brand name this-n-that.

FWIW, here is a list of SOME pantry staples I keep in my emergency stash. This is based upon OUR personal preferences so, YMMV. I already have these things plus peanut butter, hot sauce, flour, cooking oil, etc., PLUS a ton of stuff I canned last growing season. These are supplemental items that I want to buy now, from Aldi:

Jasmin rice (unless frozen, brown rice can go rancid; white rice has a long shelf life)

Canned vegetables: Corn, creamed corn, carrots, whole potatoes, sauerkraut (good for the gut in emergency situations when you’re not able to get fresh fruits & veggies)

Canned fruit: Peaches, pears, mandarin oranges

Canned Meat: Spam, Tuna, Chicken, Beef, Pork (whatever is available)

Dried beans: Lentils, Red Beans, Black Beans, Kidney Beans

Coconut oil, Honey, Molasses, Baking Soda, Apple Cider Vinegar, EVOO

Bidenflation is shrinking package sizes as prices go up, too.

Germany has avidly embraced green lunacy. They are paying the price in all sectors of their economy. Sure the Russians are not losing sleep selling their oil and gas to others and watching the Germans, who committed so many crimes against the Russian people, suffer.

Putin’s plan. Putin can ignore domestic opposition to his policies. Western leaders cannot. There will be increasing political pressure to end the war and normalize (somewhat) relations with Russia to keep the energy, wheat, fertilizer, etc. flowing. Western leaders will respond to that pressure. Time is on Putin’s side.
