Just making a prediction here to revisit later.
We saw in 2020 the rules legislatures set for elections (laws) don't matter as Dems can find a friendly judge to give them what they want: No ID, motor voter, vote drop boxes, etc. with the justification of an 'emergency' crisis.
The argument will be that the high gas prices ($8-10) it has a negative impact on the poor and African-Americans. Therefore, they have to create these accommodations to secure American voting rights and anyone opposed is worse than Bull Connor.
The poor can’t afford gas, so millions will need their ballots mailed to them.

The inner city regions which generate the most mail-in ballots are blocks away from their nearest polling location, so it is generally the same or even less distance to vote than to pick up a loaf of bread or even greater necessities such as a lotto ticket or pack of smokes.

You may be right, but it isn’t that easy. Since COVID problems were being blamed on Trump’s management of the pandemic, the mail in voting justification served a dual purpose. Get more votes without proper validation and remind people “that it would be better without Trump”. To build a case on high gas prices serves as a constant reminder of high gas prices. Not sure the Democrats will want that going into an election.
I still think they will use another variant of COVID.
