IKEA is a symbolic place for post-Soviet Russia. Middle class consumer comforts. Post-communist aspirations…

“Unlike most mundane shopping situations that are performed automatically and without any excitement, a visit to IKEA creates the feeling of a celebration of the new god of domesticity in the era of mass consumption. IKEA attracts both poor students and relatively wealthy office managers. Both groups are young but despite different incomes, they are urban, open and liberal in their worldviews, and this sets them apart from the rest of the population.

So instead of merely providing a rational consumption choice during harsh economic times, IKEA has become a resonant symbol of identity for people who live in Russian cities. In a situation where Europe has increasingly distanced itself from Russian citizens, IKEA gives them a chance to recreate an illusion of distant but desirable loci in the space of their private homes. We believe there’s a lesson to learn here.” - Liubava Shatokhina

Great idea, this Ikea, but the stuff falls apart quicker than my hairdo on a humid day.

Howevah, I LOVE going through the 365, 545, 735, 1215 sf ‘home space’

I would never buy anything upholstered from IKEA, but the case goods - dressers, bookcases, etc. - are great quality for the money.

It’s just me, ok, but I think Ikea represents a ‘throw-away’ society. I’d prefer to recycle/repurpose what’s already made.

We have found the mattresses to be a great value, although we do use toppers on them to improve the experience.

We have several things from Ikea that have held up very well.

I feel bad for the everyday people in Russia AND Ukraine. They aren’t their governments, just as WE aren’t the corruption in our own.

We have a couple of small two-drawer chests that someone gave us when they moved - I think they’re from way back in the late 1980s.

They’re the most solid pieces of furniture I’ve ever owned, hardware and everything.

Newer pieces don’t seem quite as solid, but the newer ones we’ve had for over 10 years have held up fine.

I’m just not really into their ‘modernist, minimalist’ design concept. It seems that when we’ve bought something more traditionalist and wanted another one like it, the style was discontinued.

Re: upholstered items: our Ektorp sofa, which we got at a great discount in the ‘damaged’ section just because it had a slight tear in the back, is great. But now it’s discontinued, and you can’t buy slipcovers for it; you have to shell-out for custom ones.

I agree with you. In case certain nut jobs continue accusing me of being a Russia hating, Biden loving, NWO operative secretly hacking this account.

I’ve watched quite a few of her videos over the last couple of years… Her and a couple of others.
