In a recent private meeting at Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump made a personal pitch to Senate Republican campaign chief Rick Scott. “You should run for Senate majority leader,” he told the National Republican Senatorial Committee, according to a person familiar with the exchange.
It wasn’t the first time, either: Trump has repeatedly told Scott he’d be great at the job and should challenge Mitch McConnell, multiple people with knowledge of the interactions told POLITICO. The Florida Republican didn’t tell Trump “no” that day — though he’s told reporters that he supports McConnell for leader. Instead, Scott quickly pivoted to the reason for his meeting.
“We have to focus on winning” the Senate, Scott told Trump. “My only focus is on winning.”
The Florida governor-turned-senator is navigating some treacherous terrain — and not just the Senate midterms landscape. He’s trying to balance working with the GOP’s two most powerful figures in McConnell and Trump, who also happen to despise each other.
But Scott’s predicament also underscores his rising stock in the party. The ambitious former businessman is seen as a possible presidential contender — or, more recently in some Trump circles, as a dark-horse candidate for leadership someday.
This week only cemented speculation about the latter: Scott, 69, made waves — and infuriated some McConnell allies — when he bucked the GOP leader’s decision not to lay out a policy agenda for the campaign and instead released his own. Whereas McConnell wanted to make the election a referendum on President Joe Biden’s unpopularity, inflation and other Democratic failures, Scott unilaterally decided that Republicans should also state what they’re for.
His list of red-meat proposals addressed topics ranging from term limits and finishing Trump’s border wall to nationwide voter ID laws and banning transgender athletes from women’s sports.

Rick Scott isn't the greatest, but he's preferable to John Thune, who has been groomed by McConnell to replace him as Republican leader.
In reality, I would prefer John Kennedy for Majority/Republican leader.
Anything to knock out Leader Mitch!
Kennedy would be good. I also think Ron Johnson would be reliable if he survived re-election. Of those more on the ‘inside’ and able to get those votes, Rick Scott would be passable as would Mike Lee. Neither are perfect but would be more good than bad like the current crop of losers, er, I mean leaders.
“Rick Scott isn’t the greatest, “
He’s not even close to greatest, or even great.
“I would prefer John Kennedy.”
I think Kennedy would be better. He’s pretty bold in his rhetoric, which I like. I don’t have an opinion about his actions. He could be another Trey Gowdy — big hat, no cattle.
My preference is Hawley but I think the reality of it is that we need someone who can effectively herd both the MAGA and the RINO cats, there is a far higher RINO percentage in the Senate than the House
I'm not saying that JFK was a great president, merely mediocre. But that makes him great under the low standards of Democrat presidents established by the ilk of Carter, LBJ and Clinton.
I was all for Rick Scott when he beat Sink and Crist when running for Governor of Florida. He trips over his own tongue and I don’t think is very convincing when making a point.
Maybe being a Majority Leader is a different animal, but just watching the guy, I’d have a hard time working for a company that he was in charge of.
Scott’s another compromised, controlled hack. He put out that plan to try to add a MAGA veneer, but he’s just another stooge. Unfortunately.
YES!
“I don’t think is very convincing when making a point.”
He’s a boring milquetoast, and I can’t imagine him convincing party members to do anything.
Uninspiring.
You left out Biden unless you anticipate a surge in competence in the next two years.
Politico has direct quotes how?
I like his 11 point plan..

Scott is one of Mitch’s bitches, he would never challenge him.
So then why does Trump choose Scott and not Kennedy?
He does that a lot.
True. Although the no-chinned, turtle has had a surprising command of Republicans over the years; Romney notwithstanding. These guys can have different faces behind closed doors.
It’s time for some of these Senate conservatives to STEP UP and show some LEADERSHIP. They love to run for President but then they hide and TALK a big game in front of the cameras.
Scott’s a junior Senator with one term of office not yet completed. I like John Kennedy too, although he’s also a junior Senator in his first term. Scott was at least Governor of Florida. Neither of them has been in Washington long enough to turn into Rinos, and hopefully aren’t corrupted politically yet like many other long-term Republican Senators are.
There are only a handful of conservative Senators, we need to replace every Bush League Republican.
We will not get new leadership without new membership.
Goes for both houses.
