Generals ALWAYS build up to re-fight the last war. The next one will not be with bullets and bombs but with high tech bits and bytes.

Intrusion detection is a common enterprise network asset.

“ Intrusion detection is a common enterprise network asset.”

Having spent 25 years in IT I wouldn’t call it “common” at all.

Well actually you DO have a point. ;-)

I’ll rephrase: they should have had a good intrusion detection system in place.

I did MSSP sales for years and I was absolutely shocked at how little security most mid sized businesses actually have in place. 9 times out of 10 they had an end of life firewall that hadn’t been updated or patched in 2 years.

“We are good on security. We change passwords every 30 days.”

Um, no you aren’t and no you don’t. Hell, half the IT Directors didn’t even know what was actually on their network.

Then they’d call us when they got hit by ransomware. “Can you fix this right away?”

Um, no we can’t. No one can. All we can do is rebuild from your backups. You do have daily backups, right?

I’m surprised half the companies in America haven’t been hit. Colonial Pipeline and Solar Winds should have been enough to wake people up.

Agreed.

Large/ Fortune 200 have all the tools, but yeah, out of date firewalls are common.

Once you drop to medium and small business, ya got nuthin.

We did an audit one time for a 500 seat client with 5 locations in 4 states. The CIO about messed his pants when we showed him what we found. Switches he didn’t know he had, legacy routers still connected for God only knows why, half the workstations hadn’t been patched in over a year, and 2 still active but completely unsecured internet connections he didn’t know about going directly to the offices of a couple of VPs.

This was a company doing $200,000,000 a year in sales as a subcontractor for the DOD.

IT security in America is a joke, and a very unfunny one at that.

Ever do IT work in Mexico or Central America? It’s eye opening how bad network security is.

I was there on a consulting gig that included an IT component. The consulting part had to wait 18 months until the network was adequate. (FINANCE industry).
