Dear Never Trumpers: The Cruise Is Over How a generation of "conservative" intellectuals finally turned into Democrats
A lot has happened since my well known essay "The Collapse of the Never Trumpers" appeared in 2018 — and none of it has been good for that tribe of pundits or their garden gnome leader, Bill Kristol. In fact, most of them have seen their careers collapse so spectacularly that only Michael Avenatti could really understand. George Will has semi-retired to a life of boring students to death as a commencement speaker at small colleges. Jonah Goldberg and Steven Hayes used to appear on Fox News regularly but now they pretend to fax a newsletter every morning to their remaining friends and family and David French.
What happened? My prediction of their end seemed to initiate their end. It was like watching a series of abandoned buildings get detonated in sequence. I had a front row seat, of course, and I wore a hard hat and watched it all come down. There's a lot of dust and debris left on the cable shows even now. We're looking at you, S. E. Cupp.
The list of dumb stunts and terrible tricks that the Never Trumpers tried during the Trump Administration is larger than Brian Stelter’s waistline and more barren than Max Boot’s scalp. It’s hard to catalog all the disasters. First, the "anonymous resistance" New York Times Op-Ed stunt backfired horribly with the public in 2018, while the Never Trumpers applauded
Not all of them grasped the irony of course. Bill Kristol, in particular, disgraced himself permanently with his quip about preferring the unelected "deep state" to the duly elected Trump administration. He had also mocked the American working classes from the podium of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and called for them to be replaced by foreigners.
... You can almost feel the cruise-ship conservative intellectuals drowning in a sea of failed predictions. It doesn’t matter if they sink or swim now—they’re in the middle of the North Atlantic and it’s too many miles to land in either direction.
The cruise is over.
I read this earlier, so well done. She punches at the neocons like Pat Buchanan in his prime.
There are plenty of them still in office and Trump is still endorsing them.
Flimsey Grahamnesty is Exhibit A
“In office”?
In Maryland and Vermont?
Does anyone not from there actually care about those states?
Oh well, there’ll still be plenty on FR...
Still licking each others ears.
Emerald gets her points across with great humor. I hope we hear more from her.
They have been beaten down, that’s obvious.
Flimsey Grahamnesty is from SC.
The other Amnesty Senator up this cycle in from FL, Micro Rubio, and Trump has endorsed him.
We will NEVER MAGA by re-electing Assistant Democrats who want to abandon the rule of law and give the Democrats a permanent majority with amnesty for illegal aliens.
Some "firing line"
I like how she names names and slaps them at the same time. I guess the cruise refers to National Review and Weekly Standard.
Maybe I read it wrong but Pat Buchanan a neocon? He runs with positions that are ‘conveniently’ eyebrow raising. He wrote a book criticizing our involvement in WW2 and the Ukraine as followup.
Then there are the Sarah Palins out there who conveniently stay on the sidelines when the fight is on the field and their participation needed. Money does that. My friends I just don’t trust any of them since I gave $200 to John Thune to take on tiny Tom Daschle. What has he done for us lately?
I miss her reporting on Newsmax. Many of her reports were done in front of a window that looked down on my former residence in the DC area. Shame on Newsmax for purging her.
Thune is another one that is up this cycle that needs to be replaced.
He is one of Mitch’s bitches.
Trump torpedoed most of the infiltrators.
The next task is purging the Assistant Democrats.
That task is made doubly difficult when Trump keeps endorsing them.
Mostly Blue Hairs. They are the ones who knock on doors in exchange for a cheap lunch $ local gossip.
I was reading Fred Barnes’ columns before he retired yesterday. He was another one who wound up being a liberal Republican and attacked Trump.
I used to like Jonah Goldberg, but he has come down a long way. His latest gaffe was a tweet in which he overlooked the fact that Glenn Youngkin was not yet governor of Virginia when he took him to task for the state's sluggish response to a blizzard that stranded thousands of motorists.
“Are they still whoring?” Yeah, like an aging meth addict trying to sell her body. Just not many are buying....
