Volcanic Eruption Was 600 Times More Powerful Than Hiroshima, Many Tongans Went Deaf During Explosion

Last week’s eruption of the volcano near the Pacific island nation of Tonga was 600 times more powerful than the nuke dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, in World War II. As a result, the eruption was so loud that many Tongans went deaf after the first explosion.

“The first explosion…our ears were ringing and we couldn’t even hear each other, so all we do is pointing to our families to get up, get ready to run,” Marian Kupu, a journalist on Tonga, told Reuters.

The eruption was so loud that it could be heard across the world, even thousands of miles away in Alaska.

“This might be the loudest eruption since Krakatau in 1883,” Michael Poland, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey, told NPR.

On Tuesday, the first satellite images shared by Maxar Technologies showed the tiny island nation is smothered in volcanic ash, and building structures were destroyed after a tsunami.

Days later, with limited communications due to a severed undersea communications cable between Tonga and Fiji, pictures showed the devastation on city streets.

New Zealand’s 1 News reveals the first look of the streets of Nuku’alofa, Tonga’s capital, coated with ash.

Areas on the water were utterly devastated by the tsunami

The island’s airport was cleared of ash and fixed on Thursday, allowing New Zealand and Australian military transport planes to deliver generators, hygiene supplies, freshwater, and communications equipment.

Wow. Must have been a standing wave thing. :)

Yes the package was seen to have been standing up and waving at the crowds of drones watching as it descended ...

People forget that the US continued to bomb Japan with conventional bombs after Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Still, the RAF used more incendiary than explosives.

Usually there would be a wave of explosives to destroy the roofing of the houses, followed by a wave of incendiaries to set everything flammable alight.

I wonder how much of the hearing loss on the island was permanent versus temporary.

And despite the hype here, the eruption was only a 4-5 on the VEI - relatively minor.

True. But because a lot of steam was released - it made for a great big satellite picture - and really, isn't that all that matters? /s

"I’m thinking it was more like a Spinal Tap concert." More like the original version of Megadeath from the National Lampoon Lemmings album.

Yeah, I saw that. Nearly as dumb as Biden. Each frame is at least 5 minutes apart, so it would have taken 15+ minutes to fall. It was smoke from the volcano. Also, I read it was VEI 6.

It wasn’t a natural eruption...

Keeping in the spirit of your posts, I propose backpack nukes at 20 paces as a way to settle your redundancy.

That’s weird for a volcano. I was in Seattle both times Mt St. Helens blew. I never heard anything. The weather was clear the second time so I at least got to see it.

Here's the video I watched. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WwCYmHx0KaE

It's from The Print out of India.

Am sure if I go back another couple hundred million years back from Wah Wah I could find a bigger one. But what the hell..

You will note that the mention of the “not” natural comment has stimulated discussion on this thread. All I got to say about that is..

REALLY?

15 kilotons

Instant death radius 1.1 miles

It was good enough

And would still quake all but the most determined

And aside from the material being fairly difficult to procure

The bomb itself is not difficult to make for someone relatively skilled with metals and wiring and primary powders ...

Especially if they are less concerned over the survival of the deliverer or use the bomb stationary with a timer or remote trigger or just a very long fuse like mcveigh used

The complication is in the bomb which is sorta typical combustion barometric altitude trigger compilation

The hard part was all the buildup to how does cordite exploding and hence forcing two varyingly enriched sets of uranium rings into one another down a barrel make a Big Bang .....

“I read it was VEI 6.”

Geologist I have talked to said no, but are still arguing. At first he thought maybe. But taking in the considerations of the phraetic trigger, which made the initial blast seem huge-which it was, most of the upper collum was steam. The water intensified the explosion.
The outlaying comparisons for consideration is how much gas was ejected. The shock wave comparisons-it went round the world once-Krakatoa went around abt 5 or more times.

It blowed up real good though.
