Can we get over this. Putin especially knows that he has a large country with negative demographics and a lower tier 2nd rate economy. He just wants a buffer and to stop NATO backed by the Yankee imperialists bearing flags of globalism - and we are and need to stop it -from imploding his country. The West is at his border and making impossible claims like Crimea isn't really his when it has been since the time of Catherine the Great. We are threating him and using opposing communism as the grounds for doing so.
It is a political distraction to create a strategic distraction to avoid the strategic threat of China, which is our real all consuming issue.
But we can't fix everything only some things and we need to focus on the real problem that threatens our future well-being.
