Vineland, N.J. – (Office of The Attorney General / News Release) – The Attorney General’s Office today released two 911 calls and video footage from four body worn cameras, two civilian cell-phones, and two residential surveillance cameras related to a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred on December 18, 2021 in Vineland, N.J. The decedent has been identified as Joshua Gonzalez, 20 of Millville, N.J.
The fatal shooting remains under investigation by the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA). The recordings are being released in response to an OPRA request and pursuant to policies established by the Attorney General’s Office in 2019 that are designed to promote the fair, impartial, and transparent investigation of fatal police encounters. Investigators met today with Mr. Gonzalez’s family to review the recordings.
According to the preliminary investigation, members of the Vineland Police Department were dispatched to the area of West Park Drive to respond to a 911 call of an individual operating a construction backhoe in an erratic manner. At approximately 5:00 a.m., several Vineland police officers encountered the construction backhoe being operated by Mr. Gonzalez. The police officers attempted to stop him for approximately thirty minutes, during which time Mr. Gonzalez caused extensive damage to several residences and vehicles, including three police cars, an ambulance, and an occupied civilian vehicle.
While the officers were attempting to stop Mr. Gonzalez, Sgt. Louis Platania of the Vineland Police Department fired his weapon, fatally wounding Mr. Gonzalez. Medical aid was rendered by officers and emergency medical personnel. Mr. Gonzalez was pronounced deceased at the scene at approximately 5:48 a.m.

Was this another Marvin Heemeyer in the making?
I’ll never forget the guy that took an Abrahams tank on a hell ride in Clairmont Mesa Ca
Destructive but a far cry from Kill-Dozer.
Rampaging backhoe is that Harris ?
Wow. When neighbors started building those pretentious brick or stone pillar mailboxes abutting the roads in my neighborhood, I used to joke that if I ever won the lottery, I’d rent a dozer, knock them all down, and gladly pay damages. Maybe it’s a good thing I never won ;)
But this guy ... ambulances, occupied cars, police cars, residences ... mental illness or drugs?
Every few years kids with baseball bats take out mailboxes along the road in my area. 1/2 of those are rebuilt steel or stone monstrosities but I don’t blame the owners one bit for rebuilding strong.
Are Bath Salts as a hallucinogen still a thing?
Got to add the “l” for Harris.
We never had that problem. Ever.
It’s Lovely Old Neighborhood, no sidewalks, very narrow roads, very picturesque, but people out for a stroll, walking their dogs, jogging, biking, etc. are *in* the narrow road. Even at 25 mph, it’s not always possible to see them around the many hilly curves and the lawn service vehicles often parked in the road, so one would be forced to plow headlong into one of those monstrosities to avoid them. They’re not only silly, they are dangerous.
I call them “brick outhouse mailboxes”. Only the nouveau riche neighbors who moved in and MacMansionized the lovely architectural gems they bought built them. All the Lovely Old Families kept their normal mailboxes.
There was a similar one many years ago where the guy commandeered a tank and was driving it through different side streets and neighborhoods.
He was running over and tearing up cars like they were made from aluminum foil.
Did an incredible amount of damage before he was stopped by being killed.
Not at 20. More like “ DAMMIT, BRING BACK THE DOUBLE DECKER TACO!” Or a bad trip.
The owners show real clinical apathy putting such a structure where a car could crash into it with severe injuries to the driver and passengers. It's also damning that the homeowner's insurance company and the municipality allow them.
The Killdozer
Thank you! Yes, they butt right up against the edge of the narrow road. It’s so narrow, if you meet a truck going the other way, there is no room to pass and one must pull over onto the grass or into a driveway. Residents drive slowly, but many of the delivery trucks, lawn service trucks, etc. do not.
A few years ago, a utility truck swerved to miss a pedestrian, crashed into one of the “brick outhouses” and demolished it. One of my concerns is in the split second one has to make such a choice, a car driver’s brain might signal “no, not into the stone pillar!” and someone could be hurt or killed.
They *should* be outlawed.
Clinical apathy? Give it up.
What about TREES? Do you also disapprove of trees being planted in similar locations?
Think it through before you come up with such foolish comments.
The brick outhouses are two inches from the edge of the very narrow road and there is no shoulder or sidewalk. There are *zero* trees that close to the road. Nowhere near that close.
As for trees planted curbside, notice how towns have gone to smaller ones instead of the massive oaks and maples they used to plant?
Even telephone poles are designed to sheer off instead of having cars wrap around them.
A brick outhouse mailbox at curbside is an introduced liability. Departments of Transportation, if they put out such an object would be required to shield it with bright yellow drums filled with either sand or water, yet such a homeowner doesn't think about or doesn't care about what happens to drivers or passengers of cars who crash into a brick pillar.
