The world’s greatest battleship, just in time to see carrier warfare take center stage.

I’ve seen this one. I was curious, so I rented it. It wasn’t bad. I’m guessing that some of Archimedes’s principles were used to determine how much the ship would cost to build based on the weight (or displacement?)of the materials in the short period of time he (the boy genius) had to figure it out.

Thanks for the info, I’ll tell my husband. He’s been into foreign (esp. Asian-produced) movies lately.

Hmm, I have a book on the building of the sister ship Musashi. The most amazing thing to me was the amount of trouble they had to go through to drill the wooden pads on which the hull sat in the dry dock.

Looping in the movie ping list.
I had not heard of this film, but it sounds like it’s right in the zone for a lot of us. Adding it to my watchlist.

Two reasons why we didn’t build huge battleships like our enemies did. An American built ship had to be low enough to clear the Brooklyn Bridge and thin enough to fit through the Panama Canal.

I get a kick out of the Japanese naming conventions for their ships. They had a destroyer named the
Floral Fragrance and one of their aircraft carriers that fought at Midway was named the
Increased Joy. The other Japanese carriers at Midway were the
Flying Dragon,
Green Dragon and
Red Castle.
Incidentally, Yamato was named for a Japanese province.

Thanks, we might watch it... soon. American (Hollywood) movies suck, for the most part.

Toshiro Mifune's portrayal of Admiral Yamamoto would have been the best ever if his voice had not been dubbed by Paul Frees of "The Time Machine" talking rings fame. Oh yeah, and the voice of the alien in "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers."
