On this date in 1596, the Inquisition sent nine Jewish converts to Christianity to the stake in Mexico City for Judaizing — a cruel fate offering a window into a secret history of New World settlement.
When Spain expelled its Jews (and subsequently its Muslims), those who did not flee had to convert. Conversions at swordpoint being of suspect sincerity, the Inquisition spent much of the following centuries hunting Conversos — so-called “New Christians” — who secretly preserved their outlawed faiths.
For some crypto-Jews, the New World held an appeal akin to that which would draw later generations of northern Europe’s religious minorities.
Latin America in particular attracted considerable numbers of New Christians. The advantage of these territories was that they offered the New Christians a familiar culture and the possiblity of direct — even if infrequent — contact with the mother countries … These factors also helped permit [crypto-Jews] to practice Judaism.
The Carvajals (or Carabajals) were just such a family, settling in Monterrey under the aegis of their kinsman, Spanish governor Luis de Carvajal y Cueva.
But in 1590, the governor’s sister Francisa was tortured by the Inquisition into implicating her entire family in Judaism....

The history of the Conversos in Mexico is a terrible one, and it amazes me to this day that many of their descendants who came to the US are relentlessly setting up the same conditions that destroyed many of their ancestors.
It’s some sort of weird Masada complex that they manage to embroil all of us in.
Of note, though not surprising, conversions at sword point were considered suspect and “investigated” to the ends of the earth.
Yet “confessions” obtained by torture were taken at face value.
One word used to describe Jews who pretended to be Christians or converts is “Marrano”. Many of them could be found in Northern Africa and the New World. For some later generations, they would go down to a basement/cellar and light candles for the Sabbath and do other things, often without knowing what they meant or where they came from. This was true for Mexico and possibly some of the old Spanish SW US inhabitants.
Before and during WW2, according to the noted writer Ruth King, Bolivia took in a number of Jews fleeing from Hitler and treated them very nicely. Back in those days, there was a whole subset of religiously tolerance Christian countries, esp. in Latin America. For that, we thank them.
Today, unfortunately, many of those are run by Marxists for neo-fascists (Argentina, Bolivia, Nicaragua, maybe now Honduras, possibly El Salvador if they still have a leftist government from the old Marxist groups, possibly Ecuador, etc).
During the Conquest of Mexico, 1519-1521, the Conquistadors were repeatedly admonished by the Catholic priests not to force conversions to Christianity, because a forced conversion was no conversion. That was official Church doctrine.
At the end of the reconquista,in Spain, in 1492, the Jews were given a choice: Leave, Convert, or be killed. A great many left, many converted, no doubt a few were killed.
It is not surprising the "conversions" were suspect.
The Christians had been fighting for seven centuries to take back Spain from the Muslim conquerors. Christians had been treated abominably under the Muslims. The Jews often worked with the Muslims (as did many Christians) to curry favor.
The Jews were viewed with suspicion as potential traitors and a source of allies for the Muslims.
And also in 1492 was “Columbus sails the blue” . The book “Sails of Hope” details the manifests, the financing, etc., with many Jewish exiles and crew. Columbus himself was multilingual and could write in Hebrew. So the so-called discovery of America... was it by Jews? Hmmmm...
By all accounts, Christopher Columbus was a devout Roman Catholic.
His mother was a converso and he did speak Hebrew or at least Ladino.
His logs and whatnot had a fair amount of Hebrew in them.
Of course, they also had Latin, as he was also undoubtedly a smart guy who liked to keep his mind sharp.
Hebrew would also have been useful to keep his intellectual property private.
Not all of us.
FYI: my surname is Carvajal (along with lots and lots of Texicans).
Luis Carvajal is a direct paternal ancestor.
These would be my ancestral cousins of some kind.
Luis was not hung, but rather burned at the stake.
And while, yes, he was Jewish, the more pressing issue was certain political people in Mexico owed him a lot of money and he was dumb enough to expect them to pay it back.
So they had the RCC burn him.
Bastards of the Inquisition at work.
May they burn in hell forever.
