Willie Horton and the Democratic Party's Greatest Fear
American Thinker ^ | December 2, AD 2021 | John F Di Leo

At seventy years old, Willie Horton is serving multiple lifetime sentences in a Maryland prison. His case was once famous enough that we can be reasonably certain that this recidivist monster will never again be released to commit another crime.

The nation is safe from Willie Horton. But the Democratic Party should not be.

Thirty-three years ago, this generally unremarkable piece of detritus provided an important lesson to the American electorate....

Ah, memories of 1988. I remember running into a high school classmate on my college campus. He was a liberal and started regaling me with all the reasons why Mike Dukakis was the answer to the country’s prayers. My response: “Well, he was also the answer to Willie Horton’s prayers.”

There's only one Willie Horton!

That other a-hole isn't worthy of the name.

Won’t work this time. There are more Willie Hortons out there and it’s obvious. Will the woke folk get it? Sheepdogs are not popular with the sheep-just when the wolves show up.

The US was 88% white. And still conservative.

Willie was a teammate of Al Kaline when the latter got his 3,000th hit.

AL Gore was the one who initially brought the Horton issue up, while campaigning in the primaries. Lee Atwater ran with it in the general election.

Correct. I went into those details in the article.... first the story of Willie Horton, then the story of Darrell Brooks, then the reasons why the Brooks case is virtually a complete indictment of modern DNC policy.

I just put the top few lines here. When I write for some publications, I can repost the whole article on freerepublic, but for sites like American Thinker, we’re supposed to just repost the opening. Depends on the site.

The US was 88% white. And still conservative.

Had nothing to do with race. Truth is, there was zero mainstream coverage of Horton's actual crime. After the fact, the only media coverage was how supposedly racist the "Willie Horton ad" was, which DID NOT SHOW HORTON'S RACE.

I was a Senior Staff Editor for The Reader's Digest at the time, and it was our July 1988 story "Getting Away With Murder" — WHICH ALSO DID NOT MENTION HORTON'S RACE — that changed the election results.

Like today, millions of Americans in 1988 got their actual news from alternate sources.

And the bottom line is that the ‘Willie Horton’ ads, that the democrats so hated, WERE 100% ACCURATE.

Which is probably why they hated them - they could not dispute the facts, so they just claimed it was racism to SAY them.

And THAT worked so well that it became a lesson they are still applying today. One which showed that the media was such a useful tool.

...despite a sentence that clearly provided no room for misinterpretation, the soft-on-crime Democrat government of Massachusetts, under then-governor Michael Dukakis, invited Horton to participate in an unsupervised weekend furlough program in 1986. Yes, you read that right: a vicious murderer was set free for the weekend, on purpose; he didn't even have to plan a clever escape. As one would expect, Horton failed to return, and he did who knows what for almost a year, until he was finally caught in Maryland, having beaten and knifed an innocent couple, binding the man, raping his fiancée, and stealing their car.

The difference between that time and our time is the press was basically 'news' oriented. Willy Horton was a legitimate story that reflected citizen's concerns about lax criminal guidelines.

The press wasn't corrupt back then ...

They weren't dependent on 'leaks' from corrupt democrats in 'intelligence'...

The press didn't have George Soros paid 'minders' in their news room. (reporters whose salaries are paid by Soros connected 'nonprofits')

. Yes, even with a liberal bias news men and women were respected leaders in American communities back then.

In today's world filthy press bimbos and pretentious 'men' would deal with the Willie Horton story differently - they would decide a story about Willy Horton binding a man, raping and torturing his fiancée would reflect badly on democrats and the little sh*ts at the Washington Post and New York Times would bury the story.

The press might comment on the brand of knife used in the horror - as if the knife acted on it's own - one time - then they'd drop the story. Similar to an SUV mowing down children in a Christmas parade - no 'larger issue' just a car accident - well SUV accident...

Beg to differ. If you look at the demographics of CA the white population has been on a steady decline since Reagan was in office and before he was in office.

The US has a whole has seen a decline in the white population since 1980 from 83% to 61.6% in 2020.

Not saying that's the only reason, but it's a major influencer.

Agree! I was 14 years old in 1968 and still remember much of the roster of the world champion Detroit Tigers.

The Left doesn’t want to eliminate the Criminal Justice system. They want to re-orient it to catch thought criminals and prosecute political crimes.

If Willie Horton was the poster child of the 1988 election, then Darrell Brooks must be all that and more in 2022 and beyond.
